~~Basketball accident
 This is FICTION and NEVER happened
9 year old Caleb was tired. He had stayed up last night for 3 hours to finish a big project that was due today. When the teacher asked for the projects, Caleb was ready. He put his report on his desk and waited anxiously for the teacher to come and pick it up. Once the report had been picked up, he started sleeping. He had told his friend Casey to wake him up if the teacher tried to get him to answer something. The class went smoothly and he was able to sleep the whole time, only waking up to hear what the homework assignment was. There was not homework. The period ended and he packed his stuff and headed to PE with Casey. “Man that class lasts forever. I wish it was shorter, then we could have more time to play basketball in gym.” Caleb said. “Yeah. I wish is was shorter to.” Casey agreed. When they arrived at the locker room, they changed into their gym clothes, and went out to the gym to await Mrs. Jacobs. “All right boys and girls, today we are playing basketball. I want everyone to get with two other kids. Those will be your teams.” Mrs. Jacobs said. Caleb looked at Casey and nodded. They paired up with a small boy who didn’t have a lot of friends, and got one girl. The little boy was only 4 foot 3 inches, and was named Christian. The girl was tall and was named Sarah. They told Mrs. Jacobs the team, and then they went over to a court. They decided that Caleb would be captain. They started playing against another team. They started to do a “Man to Man formation” which is when every player chooses another player from the opposite team and tries to keep them from getting the ball. Caleb had been guarding another little boy who was the same height as Christian was. His name was Kevin. Kevin’s team was winning 10-5. Suddenly, Christian ran into Kevin and thy both ended up on the floor. Both boys began to cry. Seeing the two boys on the ground, Mrs. Jacobs rushed over to them. Caleb told Mrs. Jacobs what happened while she tended to the boys. Christian started to act confused and stopped crying. He looked around and tried to get up, but couldn’t. The pain in his head too much. Disoriented He laid down and cried for help. “Help! I can’t get up! Help!” Caleb rushed over to him and started to tend to him. He noticed that Christian was dazed and confused and called to Mrs. Jacobs. She rushed over and turned to speak to Caleb. “Caleb, I need you to go and get the nurse to call paramedics. Christian here has a bad concussion. Run, if you get in trouble, tell them we need an EMT and that Mrs.  Jacobs sent you. Run! Go! Hurry!” she said. Caleb took off and started running to the other side of the school. When he was passing his English class his teacher Mr. Jones saw him running and stopped him. “HEY! What are you doing running through the school? You are going to hurt someone! Walk!” he scolded Caleb. “Sir, we need an EMT and Mrs. Jacobs sent me. Christian has a concussion. She sent me to go tell the nurse to call the Paramedics and told me to run, Sir” Caleb said in one big breath. “Oh.  Okay. Well hurry on then.” Mr. Jones said. Caleb turned and started running towards the nurse’s office. When he got there he burst into the office and started talking in one big sentence “Mrs.nancychristianhasaconcusssionandneedsanEMTandneedshelprightnow!” Caleb said. “Wait, what? Hold on. Slow down”. Mrs. Nancy Christian has a concussion and needs an EMT and needs help right now!” Caleb repeated, breathing hard from his run across the school. “Oh okay, that makes more sense. I will go call the resource officer, who will call the paramedics.” The nurse said.  “Okay. Thank you. May I go back to class now?” Caleb asked. “Yes, you may go back to class now, but you know what happens if you run back right?” She asked. “Yes mam, I get detention and Saturday school.” Caleb said. He walked back to class, but when he got there the resource officer was waiting for him. “Caleb, can you come with me for a minuet please?” he asked. “Okay, am I in trouble?” Caleb asked. “No. I just need you to tell the paramedics what happened so they can help Christian. Will you do that for me please?” he said. “Yes sir.” Caleb said, nodding. “Awesome. Thank you. Let’s go meet them.” The officer said. When they met up with the paramedics Caleb told them what happened. They then went down to the gym with Caleb to take a look at Christian. When they got there the whole gym was empty except for Mrs. Jacobs and Christian. Mrs. Jacobs had apparently sent everyone somewhere else. Christian was on the floor and was awake. Mrs. Jacobs decided that Caleb should stay with Christian while the medics tended to him to give him support and to help him. The medics decided that they should bring Christian to the ER to have a brain trauma doctor look over Christian and decide if he has a concussion. Christian asked if Caleb could go with them and they said if Caleb’s mother said it was okay, then as far as they were concerned it was okay with them. Caleb went to Mrs. Jacobs’s office to call his mom. (Her name is Rachel) “Hello?” Rachel said when she answered the phone. “Hi mom. This is Caleb.” Caleb said. “Hi Caleb, how are you?” Rachel asked her son. “Okay….” Caleb said unconvincingly. “Caleb, what’s wrong? Has something happened?”  Rachel said, growing concerned. “Yes. Something has happened. We were playing basketball in Gym and the two smallest boys in the class ran into each other hard and one has a concussion. I was guarding him and I was also team captain. The boy wants me to go with them to the hospital with him. But the paramedics said I had to check with you first. Is it okay if I go to the hospital with him? I am okay, but he really wants me to go with him.” Caleb told her. The line was silent for a few moments, then Rachel said “Yes Caleb, you may go to the hospital with this young boy. I will call the school and excuse you from your classes today. Go with them. I will meet you guys there after I call the school.” “Okay. Thank you mom. See you there. Love you.” Caleb replied. “You’re welcome. I love you too. Phone kiss!” they each made kissing noises, then hung up.
After Caleb told the medics what his mother had said, they asked Mrs. Jacobs if it was okay if he left for the rest of the day. “Yes sir he may leave.” She answered. So the medics, Christian-who by now was on a stretcher- and Caleb left the hall to go to the ambulance and go to the hospital.
Caleb looked out the back door windows of the ambulance as they speed down the highway. The hospital came into view in the front windshield as they pulled in, but they did not go the way his mother usually took him, they went down a ramp into a dark tunnel. They stopped by a pair of doors that read “Emergency.” The medic who was in the back told Caleb to stay in the Ambulance while he got out. The medic who was driving also got out. They went inside for a minute, then came back out with a nurse.  The nurse told Caleb to come with her, but he said “No! I want to stay with Christian. I won’t leave his side.” he glared at the nurse, folding his arms with a defiant “Hmph!” Then Rachel appeared. She saw Caleb glaring at the nurse and saw his defiant posture and knew what he was saying. “Caleb, please just go with the nurse, I will go with you. You can’t stay with Christian, he has to go inside and be with the doctors, but because you are not sick or hurt, you can’t go in with him. We might be able to see him later.” Rachel Said. When Caleb still refused to move, Rachel picked him up and carried him away from the ambulance. He started squirming, trying to get free. The nurse helped her keep hold of Caleb by putting on portable restraints on his arms and legs. Those made him cry more, but stopped the squirming. Next he resorted to biting. The nurse held his head away from his mother. Finally Caleb calmed down and decided to just let his mother carry him. He didn’t care anymore, he just wanted to lay down and sleep.
//Epilog
It turned out that Christian did have a minor concussion, but he was able to recover in just over a week. Caleb was actually put to sleep by the nurse, and woke up about 45 minutes later at home in his bed. They decided to go see Christian. He was very happy to see them.
The end.
