I wrote this poem after hearing my friend vent to me about a girl that was being really harsh and rude to her.

Sometimes It's Harder Than You Think

Go ahead;

Laugh at me,

Talk about me behind my back

Because ‘sticks and stones may break my bones,

But words will never hurt me.’

-

Yet as the days go by,

And their hurtful words increase.

I begin to doubt

That words will never hurt me.

-

My friends all tell me to ignore it,

But you can’t ignore the pain

That comes with each bitter rumor.

-

Those words that they throw around carelessly,

Kill me on the inside.

-

By listening,

You are giving them the power

To ruin your life.

-

But what they don’t understand

Is that those stares,

And the whispering in the schools hallways—

-

No matter how hard I try,

I can never block it out.

-

Each word against me

Is like a stab wound,

To my heart.

-

And it is a miracle

That I am still breathing.
