LOVE GROWS

A tug on my pigtail,
and a pinch on my arm,
and a roly-poly on my neck,
and a pebble on my window.
Then you finally said you loved me.

My getaway car and my welcome mat,
my proud chin and my white knuckles,
my running shoes and the stitch in my side,
my impulse to scribble on everyone else's blueprint.
Life went fast enough for us until we thought we settled down.

But in between finding a Crayon masterpiece on the new den wall,
and watching a sprinkler race, and wiping a sticky purple Popsicle chin,
and discovering a Lego and some other treasures in your expensive suit pocket,
and a dirty diaper and an Everest of baby powder because you turned your back for one second,
and a Band-Aid and a snotty, tear-stained sleeve and a brand new load of laundry,
and the dishes and the training wheels and the vacuuming and the Velcro shoes,
I wish you'd throw a pebble at my window.
