THE DONKEY, FARMER AND A WELL

Once in a village, there lived a young farmer with a young donkey. The farmer had a well at the back of his house from which water is drawn and used for the house and also for the near by farms. Both the farmer and the donkey were very much happy and contented with each other and lived a happy life. As days passed by, the farmer became old and so was the donkey. The well also dried up. The donkey was not able to work up to the expectations of his master due to his old age. The farmer was very much disappointed about his donkey’s inability to work now and his duty to feed him as before. One day he decided to push the donkey into the well and close the dry well as well thereby achieving two purposes, disposing the useless donkey and filling up the dry well.

He went to his neighbors and asked them to help him in his mission. That fateful day had come and he fed his donkey with good food and treated him good and slowly moved him towards the dry well. The unsuspecting donkey was very happy about his master’s change in behavior and brayed happily. When they reached the well, the farmer pushed the donkey with full force into the well. The well being dry for quite sometime has collected layers of fallen leaves from trees, and it effected deceleration to the falling donkey and a relatively softer hit to the ground. The donkey being very much hurt at the heart as well as at the body at his master’s betrayal looked up and brayed sadly. Suddenly a basket full of dirt and mud were thrown by his master on his already bruised back. The naïve victim yelled like hell. Then the farmer’s neighbors one by one came with baskets full of mud and dirt and threw at the donkeys back and spat into the well.

After receiving few baskets full of blows on the back, the donkey understood the situation and started to think how he could handle this situation. He came up with an idea and whenever a basket is emptied on its back he shook his back and stepped up once. He continued to do this relentlessly. Whenever he received a basket full of dirt, he just shook himself and stepped up once. When the well was almost filled, to much chagrin of the farmer and his neighbors, the donkey was at the brim of the well from which he easily jumped out. He started waking tall with raised head while the farmer and his neighbors out of guilty of their act could not stop him. He walked free in to the woods and lived happily thereafter.

Sometimes in our life we were made donkeys, betrayed by our own friends and relatives. But it is a matter of our choice whether we decide to stay inside the well and get buried or come out and walk tall and free.
