Escaping Death

I’m running.
From everything:
Words swirling in my mind’s eye,
Repeating themselves desperately,
Pleading for the truth-
The reassurance of a lie.

My bare feet pounding relentlessly
Against the cool, hard ground.
Taking me to the old bridge
Over the forgotten, dried-up creek bed.
Where the play
Of our childhood took place.

I’m running.
From his death
Or to mine

I do not know.
