I Am From

I am from a past dotted with ashes and a future abundant with sunshine.

I am from mountains, creeks, and forest floors, blanketed in layers of yellowing pine needles.

I am from turning pages of tiny black print in books with laughter, tears, and magic.

I am from 3 weeks of pure bliss, and lifelong friends.

I am from swimming in Lake Michigan, grasping my friends’ hands tightly as our teeth chatter in the icy water.

I am from tears and hugs and scribbled phone numbers as we say good-bye to an amazing summer of art, music, and poetry.

I am from easels and the clean smell of waiting paint, and visions of pictures fight to be released onto a brand new white canvas.

I am from mint chocolate chip ice cream after school, with a crunchy cone to match.

I am from endless family get-togethers, with the smell of cooking food and the screams of happy cousins playing hide and go seek.

I am from long, hot, hikes in Arizona’s mountains, belly flopping into the big blue pool and eating ice cream.

I am from periodical shouts of “UNO!!” while my friend and I ferociously attack the pile in a blur of colorful cards.

I am from crunching Cheetos™ on the couch, absorbing tales of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, trying to ignore the “BOOM!” “POW!” and “DIE!” of my brothers’ video games.

I am from worn notebooks, half-filled, sneering at me to finish the 12 novels I’ve started.

I am from a cherished seal cat toy that mysteriously creeps under my bed in the middle of the night.

I am from dusty basketballs, shooting hoop after hoop, and our sweaty jerseys shimmering as we slap triumphant high-fives.

I am from pillows and blankets, torn off my bed, spread in a tangled blob on the floor, watching movies, and eating homemade popcorn.

I am from old friends that grow apart, and new friends who are brief; we just say hi; but truly I am from old friends that’ll stick together forever.

I am from the pebbles, the ladybugs, and the chickadees.

I am from a past dotted with ashes and a future abundant with sunshine.

That is where I am from.
