She Was...

She was the scent of the city

after a long, clensing rain;

and the gentle breeze that carries

the salty tang of the ocean

to miles and miles away.

She was the first, refreshing bite of an apple,

sweet, tart, juicy;

the ease of ice cream

slipping down your throat.

She was the eternal call of a chickadee,

peacefully floating in

through your open window

in the late morning;

the gossip of the clear river,

flowing over the rocks as if

they were old friends.

She was the crunch of leaves beneath your feet

satisfyingly succumbing to your awesome power;

the surprising splatter ofbright red paint

onto a blank, white canvas.

She was the warm, fragile body

of a sleeping child,

breath forever steady;

and shrieking in joy for absolutely no reason at all-

then gazing at the deep blue sky

for hours on end.

She was my best friend;

My sister;

My mentor;

Myself.

Now she's gone.
