The Automobile Accident

???? She touched his hand as the paramedics carried him away on a stretcher. His pale finger was slowly dripping blood onto the graying asphalt of the street running alongside the old wooden playground.? The girl had fat tears rolling down her blotchy red face, leaving pathways of dirt behind them.? I watched them, from about ten feet away, sitting on rough curb.? The cops had already arrived and blocked off the busy road.? This girl was my granddaughter, and the boy was her verybest friend.? The men loaded the boy into the ambulance. His sandy blond hair fell gracefully over the side of his forehead, and the remnants of a laugh were preserved on his face.? Red and blue lights flashed violently, echoing onto the crowd and the girl’s face, revealing the drops of blood shimmering on her pristine white dress.

??? ? “Sweetheart, go on now.? There’s nothing you can do,” I heard one of the paramedics say, kneeling low on the ground next to her.
??? ? “I won’t!? Thomas is hurt real bad!” she said fiercely, and then added, “Please, sir, can I come too?” with a desperate pleading in her round green eyes.? I smiled to myself when she said sir, like a polite grown-up.
???? The man rose a little bit, putting his hands on his knees, and turned to someone else on his crew.? He gave him a stricken glance, as if to say, “What do I tell her?”
? ??? I stood up and walked briskly to my girl.? “Gracie,” I said, opening my arms.
? ??? She ran to me, and I crouched down, allowing her to sag into my worn leather jacket.? Rosie buried her face into the crook of my neck.
? ? ? “Grampa,” she whispered, and then broke into great, heaving sobs.
? ? ? “What happened?” I pried gently.
????? “H-he fell down in the road, and-“ she choked out, “and when he got up, a-a big white truck knocked him down real hard,” said Gracie. She looked up at me and nodded slightly.
? ? ? A loud siren blared into the air, and she wrenched herself harshly out of my grasp, ran a couple steps, and then broke off.? She gazed solidly at the ambulance hurtling away, turning onto a small alley.? After a few minutes, the crowd of people had thinned, leaving Gracie standing at the edge of the curb, staring at the corner where she had lost sight of the ambulance, and more importantly, Thomas.

???? I stood several feet behind her.? I waited for a little while longer, then walked slowly over to her. “Grace. What’s done is done.”? She grasped my hand, and silently led the way home.
