This is something small I wrote and I want some opinions on things I can improve

My name is Zachariah Coles, and I was born colorblind. Now I know that is no way to start a story, but it fits. I admit that being color blind is not the worst thing in the world, I could be deaf, or blind, or mentally challenged. I have it good compared to most; I just can’t see even basic colors. It is all in black and white, even the patterns, just sometimes slightly darker or lighter shades of grey. I also never made any friends, not because of my disability, but just because I didn’t want to. Friends are too hard to keep track of, they expect things. The only friend I have is Devon, how I met him was quite odd actually. I was sitting in the park once, and he just came over and asked me the oddest question, at first I thought he was making fun of me then I realized that he would have no way of knowing. He asked me what color the sky was that day. I looked up and simply said that it was grey, still thinking he was just being rude to me at the time, then a raindrop hit my nose. “Exactly,” he had said “better get home before it gets too bad.” I blinked in confusion then realized what had just happened. I remember learning that the sky is normally blue (which I had no idea how blue looked) but when it storms, it turns dark and grey. I never looked at the sky much before that, due to the lack of beauty normal people saw, so I didn’t notice the pattern change. Anyway, that is how I met Devon, he and I talked after that and now he is the only person I trust with my secret disability.

I won’t bore with details of everyday life for me, I mean, I’m just like any normal kid; I get up, go to school, go home, and go to bed. It’s a normal routine. The reason why I decided I would write this down today was because something… very odd happened to me. A new girl came to our school, as usually happens. I never saw her, just heard about her. She was deaf, but she could still somewhat speak through some voice training that I don’t really understand. Anyway, she was making friends by the dozens and all people talked about was how, quote on quote, “amazing” this girl was. Again, I never saw her, so I had no idea who she was and I didn’t care, I never looked at anyone. On my way to class one day, I was held up by something that had happened in the hallway, I think someone puked or something. Anyway, I was held up there and I decided to take a detour so I wouldn’t be late, and on my way, I saw something very interesting that caught my eye. I saw a girl that had never caught my eye before but right now, I couldn’t stop staring at her, for what I saw, was a girl standing there, in a red shirt with white letters across the front saying something about being cool or something, and blue denim jeans… the thing was though… I saw her in color, not anything around her, but her. She wasn’t black and white like the rest of the world. I swear I thought I was crazy; I just stared at her in shock of what I was seeing. There were thoughts bursting through my head, left and right. Finally, I shook it all off and went to class. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, couldn’t stop thinking about her… What made her so special? The teacher snapped me out of my day dream, it was the end of class and the bell had rung, everyone else was gone. I apologized and got up to leave, I decided I had to see that girl again. I went out and I didn’t even have to look out for her, it is impossible to miss the only color in your life. After about three minutes of searching, I finally found her again. I walked up and tapped her on the shoulder, she was about four inches shorter than I am (I’m not the tallest of guys). She turned around and smiled at me, I said hi in the sweetest tone I could… and she froze, staring at me in shock. What had I done to scare her like that? Was I wearing some sort of mask that I had forgotten about, or was there a huge spider on my face. She mumbled something back that sounded like a half audible “hi” I was startled by how unpracticed she sounded… then I realized what had just happened… I had just met the new, deaf girl… and she had heard me.
