THE TONGUE

It’s pale yet beautiful, light yet powerful

Small yet dangerous, needed yet feared

Hated yet loved

In it lies the worst contradiction of all

We use it for good; we use it for bad

We use it when we are happy and when we are sad

We use it to praise and to disgrace

It’s a dagger against us and a weapon to save us

Causing us pain but releasing much of the same

Bringing joy when use right and pain the other way

In its power lies death, and in it lies life

It’s a gift from God and comes along with life

To use we may or we may not,

The choice of which we are free to make

If only we could but chose each day, what to say or not to say,

We would save ourselves much heartache

But we always succumb to the power or our tongue

Then live regretting many of its tales
