They Came and Went
Episode 2 “Selection”

(Derek is seen walking around a big, gray room. He has a tragic look on his face, like he’s really hurting. He’s walking on crutches and wearing bland gray clothes. His face has a few healing bruises and he has bandages on the parts of his body that were hit by the aliens’ blasters. He walks past a basketball and sees a basketball hoop as he walks by it.)

(A voice starts talking in the background as he walks, the voice of the surgeon he met before.)

SURGEON’S VOICE:
All of what I am about to say may be difficult to hear. Please understand that none of this is a joke, prank, trick, anything. But if you’ve seen half of what we’ve seen, you probably know it’s the truth. Approximately 3 days ago, an alien invasion happened. The same aliens that have been contacting the planet for weeks. They…from what we heard, they came in billions.
They came down to Earth…in every city, with ships, weapons. First, our technology goes dead. All of it. No phone signal. They must have found a way to turn off every bit of electricity we have. And then, the next big thing happens. Every person on the planet…that isn’t a teenager…disappeared. Their body went white and just…went somewhere else. I saw it happen to my own parents and little brother. It was like Star Trek. They just beamed away.
And all that was left on the planet was every human being between the ages of 13 and 19. The aliens stayed to kill us…clear out the planet.

(We cut to a flashback, where Derek is still laying in the hospital bed, talking to the surgeon)

DEREK:
How…how many of us are left?

SURGEON:
Not many. It’s bad. The aliens are everywhere.

DEREK:
How many of you are here?

SURGEON:
Close to 100. We’ve all been training how to use guns and defend ourselves. We don’t have time to wait for anything, this is happening now.

DEREK:
Riley…I have to find-

SURGEON:
Anyone you’re looking for, you’re not going to find. I’m going to put this bluntly. We’re nearly extinct on this planet. I don’t know where the children and adults went, if they’re alive, if they’re being experimented on, if they were chosen for a better place and we were left behind, I don’t know. But us…the ones that are still here. All dead. We’re all pretty much dead.

DEREK:
How do you know it’s this bad everywhere? Maybe it’s just this city.

SURGEON:
We’ve managed to contact others. People in different states…countries. They’re describing the exact things we’ve seen here. Plus, before it went off, the news showed some of the ruin. And there’s so many aliens out there, if you set foot out of this facility without being careful, you’ll get your head blown off.

DEREK:
Where are we?

SURGEON:
Just a few miles south of where we found you. We’ve sent out teams to find other survivors.

DEREK:
How long have I been out?

SURGEON:
2 days. We had to keep you stabilized until it was safe for you to wake up. No waste of pain killers and stitches, as I’ve said before. (smiles)

DEREK:
What’s your name?

TIMOTHY:
Timothy Williams.

DEREK:
I’m-

TIMOTHY:
Derek Leighter, 18...born August 30th, which was 3 days ago. We looked at your I.D. (hands him his wallet) Don’t worry, all of your stuff is still there. Money doesn’t have a use at the current moment.

(Derek looks at his wallet and gives Timothy a suspicious look, but he slowly trusts him)

DEREK:
This is…crazy. I believe you, I think, but…

TIMOTHY:
You were hoping it was a bad dream.

DEREK:
Yeah.

TIMOTHY:
It’s more like a nightmare.

(Cut to Timothy and Derek walking around in the facility. The inside of this place is big and roomy, and there‘s other teenagers walking around. Derek glances at some of them. Some look 17-18, and some are as young as 13 and look the most traumatized. One girl in particular is just sitting, looking catatonic.)

TIMOTHY:
This facility is made out of titanium. We’ve gotten plenty of supplies- you know, chips, crackers. We’ve been eating a lot of bread because they’re only going to stay good for a few more days, but plenty of snacks will be edible for a long time, and we have a lot.

DEREK:
…that’s good. Wait. (they both stand still for a moment) If this is as bad as you say it is, why aren’t we dead?

TIMOTHY:
We’re safe, for the moment. This facility is underground. Operated by an elevator.

DEREK:
Man, I…my family.

TIMOTHY:
We’ve all lost our families. Most people here…they’re broken. Hell..(laughs) everyone’s broken right now. But this is the reality we’re living in. So, don’t let yourself fall into denial. Denial will get you killed.

DEREK:
But my sister…she was about a year younger than me. That means they didn’t take her, or beam her up, or whatever. She could be alive.

TIMOTHY:
The chances of that…

DEREK:
She’s smart, I know my sister. She would find a way to hide. I have to go look for her.

TIMOTHY:
Derek-

DEREK:
We lived just a few miles away, she could be close!

TIMOTHY:
(sighs) Look, I’m not saying you’re right or wrong, ok? But listen to me. You’re in no state to go out there.

DEREK:
I’m fine. I don’t even need these crutches.

TIMOTHY:
Hey, take it easy. Those shots you took…they’re like the blasters from Star Wars. Luckily, only a portion of the shots hit you, except for your shoulder, but that will heal.

DEREK:
I’m leaving now.

TIMOTHY:
Fine, give me 2 days. There are some guys I know that are pretty good at training people how to use a firearm, and that way you might manage to come back alive. We found some guns with you. How good are you with them?

DEREK:
Uh…not very. My uncle was a cop, so I knew where a stash was hidden.

TIMOTHY:
Ok, well, I think it’s time you met some of the other leaders.

DEREK:
Leaders?

TIMOTHY:
There’s 8 of us, me included. We decided who would be a part of the council on the 2nd day.

DEREK:
The council?

TIMOTHY:
Yes. We’re the leaders of the group, and decide things like strategizing searches, organizing items, medical supplies. Getting in the council is a bit tricky. You have to be a true leader.

DEREK:
Ah…a true leader.

(the 2 arrive to a circular room where 7 others are sitting in chairs- their names are MICHAEL, KENNLEY, BLAKE, CASEY, KATIE, WADE and JOSH. Most of them are 15-18, with the exception of Josh who’s 13)

TIMOTHY:
Hello everyone. This is Derek, the kid that got shot 3 times, and all he’s worried about is finding his sister.

BLAKE:
Ah, a classic.

JOSH:
Don’t give our people any ideas.

CASEY:
Your people?

TIMOTHY:
(to Derek) Don’t mind Josh, he’s a smart but a little hot-tempered.

WADE:
That’s because he hasn’t entered puberty yet.

JOSH:
I have so!

BLAKE:
Ok man, none of us want any of that information.

KATIE:
So you’re worried about your sister?

DEREK:
Yeah. I think she’s still alive.

KATIE:
Well that’s good.

TIMOTHY:
He’s wounded, but I’ve taken good care of him and he should be fine in a few days. Anyway, he could use some gun training though. Blake, you interested?

BLAKE:
What do you know about firearms? Have you killed an alien yet?

DEREK:
Um…no.

BLAKE:
Oh cool, well, neither have I. But I can show you how to be a good shot.

DEREK:
Ok..

BLAKE:
We’ll get started tomorrow morning. A lot of things to do tonight.

TIMOTHY:
Ok, well, we’ll be going now.

CASEY:
Bye Timothy.

TIMOTHY:
See ya guys.

(Timothy and Derek exit and continue walking around the facility)

DEREK:
So, what do you have to do to become a leader?

TIMOTHY:
Oh, you just have to know the full titles of all 6 Star Wars movies.

DEREK:
(smiles) Piece of cake.

(Cut to later that day, where Derek is taking a stroll alone. He watches other teenagers. Some look more hopeful than others. He sees the young girl he saw earlier, sitting by herself. He walks up to her)

DEREK:
Hello.

GIRL:
Hi.

DEREK:
I didn’t mean to scare you. I just…I’m new here, so yeah.

(the girl just looks at him and then looks away)

GIRL:
I’m wondering where my family is.

DEREK:
Oh really?

GIRL:
Yeah. My parents and my little brother. I know they disappeared, but what if they come back?

DEREK:
That would be nice.

GIRL:
Did you lose your family, too?

DEREK:
Yeah.

GIRL:
Did they die, or did they disappear?

DEREK:
(pauses) I don’t know. Well, I’m sorry about your family.

GIRL:
Thanks.

(Cut to Blake teaching Derek on guns in a small room)

BLAKE:
Alright, first, you want to position your arms this way.(shows him how to hold the gun) And then you just aim. The good thing about these freaks, is that they have big heads. The bad thing is, they can get shot in the head and still be alive. You want to be able to take cover a lot, because they come in hordes. I haven’t seen many of them by themselves.

DEREK:
Neither have I, but then again I didn’t see many at all. Just the ones that shot me up and killed my friends.

BLAKE:
Yeah. I saw a few of my friends die, too. Does it make you angry?

DEREK:
…of course.

BLAKE:
Good. Then use it. When you’re fighting for your life, anger can actually be really useful. It can make you quicker, but also clumsy.

DEREK:
Ok.

(Blake points to targets of figures that are on the wall)

BLAKE:
Try shooting one of these targets.

(Derek aims at a target, and fires, sending a shot right in the middle of the head)

(Cut to Derek laying in a couch in the nighttime. He’s asleep but jolts up and yells. He breaths harshly and looks around, before relaxing again and closing his eyes)

(Cut to the next morning. The council is gathered around Derek in their council room)

DEREK:
And….the last one is called Return of the Jedi.

JOSH:
Wow, he knows the names of all 6 Star Wars films. He is indeed worthy of the council. Congratulations.

BLAKE:
Timothy, you better not have cheated and told him.

DEREK:
I’m pretty big on Star Wars.

TIMOTHY:
We didn’t cheat.

BLAKE:
You sure?

TIMOTHY:
Bro, you know I’m a bad liar! Besides, even if we cheated, Derek is a needed member of the council. This guy is resilient and I think he’s as smart as the rest of us, and can manage supplies and the like.

DEREK:
I’m sure I can prove my use to you.

CASEY:
What difference does it make? He’s probably going to get himself killed looking for his sister.

DEREK:
My sister is alive.

CASEY:
Ah, denial. Tsk-tsk, not good.

DEREK:
Excuse me? Look, I believe she’s still alive and am going to find her. That is none of your business.

CASEY:
It’s my business if you use our supplies and die.

DEREK:
I’ll be careful.

TIMOTHY:
I’ll have his back. We’re going to go out and do a supply run, while we look for other survivors.

CASEY:
Oh great, so you’re both going to get killed. Aren’t you barely good with a gun?

TIMOTHY:
No, but this guy’s good. He’ll save my ass if he has to. But we’ll be fine. I know the area better than most of you, anyway.

JOSH:
Timothy…you need to swear that you guys are going to come back.

TIMOTHY:
We swear it.

BLAKE:
Alright, but please bring back a lot of supplies. We’re not low yet on water, but we need to plan ahead and have as much of that as possible.

DEREK:
We’ll get a lot of bottles and stuff.

BLAKE:
We might have to start opening fridges and pouring the water in canisters.

JOSH:
Alright, this council meeting is adjourned.

(Cut to Derek and Timothy exiting the room)

DEREK:
What’s that girl’s problem?

TIMOTHY:
Casey? Don’t mind her, she was one of my friends in college. All of this has hit her hard…it’s hit us all hard…and she covers that up.

DEREK:
I’ll try to be nice. So wait, you were both in college?

TIMOTHY:
Yeah. Freshmen at East Academy. 19-years-old, missed it by that much. I’ll be turning 20 in a few weeks, if we manage to keep track of the days.

DEREK:
You know, that council is a pretty tough group. Acting really professional.

TIMOTHY:
Well, tough is the only option we have. That’s the point of the council, so that in this alien uh, apocalypse, there’s a group that can keep other kids from losing their minds. A lot of people in here are quiet. I don’t think it’s quite caught up with everyone yet.

(another kid walks up to them)

KID:
Hey Timothy, have you talked to them yet?

TIMOTHY:
Yeah Drake, they still don’t want you to take the test again. You failed, I’m sorry.

DRAKE:
But that’s stupid! The titles of Star Wars movies?! How nerdy do you have to be?!

DEREK:
Pretty nerdy, to be fair.

TIMOTHY:
I’ve already tried to make a case for you. Look, if you can’t join the council, I’m sure there’s other ways you could help. Besides, just give it time. They’ll probably change the rules of the test.

DRAKE:
Ugh, whatever.(walks away)

DEREK:
You couldn’t just tell him the titles?

TIMOTHY:
Like I said, I’m a bad liar.

DEREK:
Hey, there’s this one girl. She looks like she’s 12.

TIMOTHY:
Who, Alice? Yeah she’s 13.

DEREK:
She looks pretty messed up.

TIMOTHY:
She’s traumatized. We’re keeping her fed and trying to help her. I think she’ll be ok in the long run. She’s told me that her favorite candy is skittles, so she wants us to find them when we go on our searches.

DEREK:
Skittles sound pretty good right now.

(Cut to Alice, sitting in a chair. Derek walks to her)

DEREK:
Hey.

ALICE:
Hey.

DEREK:
Listen, um, Timothy told me that you really like skittles and were looking for them, and I found these. (hands her 2 packs of skittles) They were in a box.

ALICE:
Wow, thanks.

DEREK:
No problem. Stay cool.

ALICE:
Um, sure.

(Later, Derek is standing by the couch he slept on the night before, taking a sip from a water bottle as Timothy walks to him)

TIMOTHY:
Ready to head out?

DEREK:
Yep.

(They walk to the elevator and Timothy presses a button for them to go up)

(Above them, outside, in the bright daylight, far away, 2 aliens are walking around by some trees. A teenage guy who’s been shot multiple times is crawling away from them on the ground in front of them)

TEENAGER:
Please….please…

(the aliens shoot him multiple times, killing him. They begin talking in mysterious clicking noises, but subtitles are displayed showing what they’re saying)

ALIEN #1:
Clllk-cllk(Do you think any humans are still alive?)

ALIEN#2:
Cllk-cllk(We’re not done yet. It might be some time before we’re done)

(to be continued)
