They Came and Went
Episode 5 “Others”

(Zook’s group and Chris’ group continue to eye each other. Chris, Nicholas and Hassie point their guns at them, ready to use them)

ZOOK:
Why are you pointing guns at us?

CHRIS:
It’s just a precautionary.

ZOOK:
Are you going to shoot us?

(Among their group is a tough-looking teenage girl. She’s Asian and has some piercings and tattoos. She angrily points her gun at Chris’ group)

ZOOK:
Dina, there’s no need for that. Put it down.

(Dina reluctantly lowers her weapon)

ZOOK:
I don’t understand. We’re survivors like you.

CHRIS:
We know that, but…you could be dangerous.

ZOOK:
We’re not a threat to you. The aliens we just killed…very easily, by the way, are the enemies.

NICHOLAS:
Chris, I think they’re cool.

HASSIE:
Yeah.

CHRIS:
(pauses, then lowers his gun) Sorry about that. Trust issues.

ZOOK:
It’s ok. Mine name’s Zook.

CHRIS:
I’m Chris. This is my group.

ZOOK:
You been trying to be careful around here? Most teenagers are dead.

CHRIS:
Yeah.

ZOOK:
It’s hard to believe.

(Derek looks at Zook with concern. He whispers to Riley)

DEREK:
Stay close to me.

RILEY:
They seem ok.

DEREK:
I’m beginning to think Chris had a point.

RILEY:
But they’re survivors like us.

DEREK:
Haven’t you ever watched movies and tv shows? When the apocalypse happens, there’s always crazy people. Something isn’t right about him. He’s acting…too calm.

ZOOK:
You been a group for a while?

HASSIE:
Yeah, most of us have been together for about a week.

ZOOK:
(looks at the aliens’ bodies)They’re everywhere. They look for us in every place. We’ve got a pretty big group about a few miles due west. We’re scavenging for supplies without risking most of our group’s safety.

DEREK:
Smart.

CHRIS:
Yeah.

ZOOK:
You know, our plans are to…head out of the state. Get to the mountains, and find a place where there’s a lot of animals to hunt. Hopefully they won’t look for us as much there.

CHRIS:
Yeah, that could work. We’ve got a place where we’re hiding.

ZOOK:
Oh. Are there any more of you?

NICHOLAS:
Um-

CHRIS:
No, there isn’t.(fake smiles) It’s just us.

ZOOK:
Oh. Really?

CHRIS:
Yeah, why?

ZOOK:
It’s not smart to stay bunched up. It’s good to have someone else farther away in case you need someone to flank an alien. Guys, you can come out. They’re safe.

(two guys with guns come out of the bushes and lower their guns, while walking over to Zook’s group. Chris, Derek, and everyone stare at them, shocked)

ZOOK:
(shrugs) We weren’t sure if we could trust you, either.(pauses) But now that we can…would you be interested in joining us?

CHRIS:
I don’t know, I’ll have to talk it over with everyone.

ZOOK:
That’s fine. There’s no rush. Well, not much of one.

(Derek, Riley, Chris, Nicholas and Hassie are gathered together in a circle a few yards from the others)

NICHOLAS:
Why did you lie to them about the others, man?

CHRIS:
They don’t need to know that right now.

DEREK:
Yeah.

RILEY:
So, what do we think of their offer?

CHRIS:
I think we shouldn’t go with them. We’d have to go back and get the others, and…going to the mountains? I don’t think that would work.

DEREK:
Why not? The mountains would be more desolate. It’s possible we would be safer there.

NICHOLAS:
It could work.

DEREK:
Yeah, and the more good shooters we’re with, the better our chances of staying alive, at least in my opinion.

CHRIS:
You think it’s safety in numbers?

DEREK:
No, I think it’s safety in good shooters. Look at them, you’re not going to find tougher people.

CHRIS:
I’m a good shot. You’re a good shot, Hassie and Nicholas are.

RILEY:
I want to learn!

DEREK:
Yeah, but besides that, our group aren’t exactly the expendables. Eventually, we’re going to need people that are good with guns.

CHRIS:
And our group will be, but I still don’t like their plan.

DEREK:
It’s as good of a plan as hiding under a cabin and hoping we don’t get found forever. How long can we all do that?

CHRIS:
I want to try doing that for a few months. We don’t know how long these things are going to stay here. We don’t know if they’re going to leave the planet the same way they came, or if this is going to end up being their new homeworld. We just don’t have a lot of information right now, and until at least some time has passed, I think staying underground is the safest bet, not going out into the mountains.

DEREK:
Well what if there was a cabin in the mountains and a big basement like the one we’re in?

CHRIS:
Maybe, but getting food and drinks might be more difficult. Right now, we’re surrounded by houses.

HASSIE:
I could hunt.

NICHOLAS:
Yeah, we could all learn to hunt deer and eat that every day, or whatever.

CHRIS:
If we go with them, that’ll be like, what, 40+ people? And we’re all going to hunt and live in the wilderness, while trying not to get killed by thousands of monsters with laser guns? I don’t see it.

DEREK:
It’s hard to say. Plus, something about the way that guy acts…Zook? He just seems too calm.

RILEY:
He seems nice enough to me.

NICHOLAS:
Maybe he doesn’t care if he lives or dies. He could be hardcore, or some shit like that.

DEREK:
That can be dangerous.

CHRIS:
Right. Yeah. Exactly my point. Running off with this group and hoping it all works doesn’t seem right. We should stay at the cabin at least just for a few more weeks, and see if the uh, company around us dies down or not.

DEREK:
So, seriously, do you ever think these aliens are going to leave the planet?

RILEY:
Why would they stay?

NICHOLAS:
To kill us all.

HASSIE:
They don’t need a reason. They’re just monsters.

NICHOLAS:
(sighs) It sucks, man.

CHRIS:
So, can we all agree to stay in the cabin?

NICHOLAS:
Yes.

HASSIE:
Mm-hmm.

RILEY:
I’m with you guys.

DEREK:
Yeah, why not.

CHRIS:
Ok, we’ll just tell them we appreciate their offer, but no.

(Chris begins to walk away but is stopped by Ashley and Rosalyn who are standing together)

ASHLEY:
Me and Ros were talking and how we don’t understand why you lied to them.

ROSALYN:
Yeah, why didn’t you tell them about the rest of us?

CHRIS:
It was just instinct, it doesn’t really matter.

HASSIE:
The truth hurts sometimes, ladies.(winks at them)

ASHLEY:
Did you guys just have a big discussion?

CHRIS:
Yeah, we decided not to take up on Zook’s offer. Besides, we’d have to go back and get everyone else, and he might not wait for us.

DEREK:
We should stay at the cabin for the time being.

ROSALYN:
Why didn’t you involve us?

ASHLEY:
Yeah, we should be able to express our opinions!

ROSALYN:
Do you not take us seriously or something? We want to help.

CHRIS:
Uh…look, I’m sorry. From now on, I’ll try to involve you both more in everything.

ASHLEY:
Ok, you better. Because if not, maybe we should go with them.

CHRIS:
Go ahead, no one’s going to stop you.

ASHLEY:
(rolls her eyes) Ugh.

(Ashley and Rosalyn both walk away)

DEREK:
They seem a little …preppy.

CHRIS:
Yeah, they’re both as dumb as a bag of bricks. (grins) Remember when we found them, Nicholas?

(Nicholas nods)

DEREK:
What, how did you find them?

CHRIS:
Me and Nick were walking around in a high school. It’s empty, though it had a lot of dead bodies. We hear some faint talking. (Nicholas is grinning and nodding) We try to track down the noise. And we find them both, sitting in a little closet, with nothing but a box full of different kinds of lipstick, some rolls of toilet paper, and a half-eaten bag of cheese puffs.

(Riley and Derek start laughing)

NICHOLAS:
Oh man.

DEREK:
Maybe they’ll adjust to the circumstances we‘re in.

HASSIE:
If not, I can always make them my sex slaves.

CHRIS:
No Hassie, no human slavery.

HASSIE:
(playfully)Aww.

(Arin suddenly walks to the group)

ARIN:
Guys, we have a problem.

CHRIS:
A problem?

DEREK:
What is it?

ARIN:
It’s these guys. I have a bad feeling about them. They’re dangerous, and we should all sneak away now.

DEREK:
What makes you say that?

ARIN:
I’m predicting it.

DEREK:
You’re what?

CHRIS:
Arin here thinks he can see the future.

ARIN:
I don’t think it, I know I can see it.

DEREK:
Um, are you kidding? Am I the only person who thinks that’s uh, nuts? I mean, no offense, or anything.

ARIN:
Well, no offense, but you’re wrong. And considering you’re relatively new to our group, I wouldn’t question the way we do things.

DEREK:
Whoa, calm down. I didn’t mean to insult you.

CHRIS:
He has been able to see the future several times, or at least predict things that are about to happen.

DEREK:
Oh.

ARIN:
Yeah, we were walking behind a house a few days ago, and I stopped Chris from going further because I predicted that there were a large group of aliens around the corner.

CHRIS:
And there were, and there was no way he could’ve known that.

RILEY:
He also predicted that I’d reunite with you soon.

ARIN:
Now I’m saying these people are dangerous and we should run away from them now.

DEREK:
Really? Well, that’s interesting. I guess it’s possible you can predict the future.

HASSIE:
After all the things I’ve seen, humans telling the future wouldn’t surprise me.

ARIN:
So, are we going to run now or what?

CHRIS:
Nah.

ARIN:
What?!

CHRIS:
You’re saying that they’re dangerous, right? Did you predict that they’d shoot us and kill us all or anything?

ARIN:
No, no, that’s not how it works, but-

CHRIS:
Then I’m at least going to be formal with them. If they draw their weapons or do anything I don’t like, Nick, Hassie, mow them down.

NICHOLAS:
No problem.

(They walk back to Zook’s group)

ZOOK:
Well, we must be heading back soon. Have you made a decision?

CHRIS:
Yes, and we’ve decided not to go with you.

ZOOK:
Really?

CHRIS:
It’s a tempting offer, but…yeah, we’re interested in staying here for now.

ZOOK:
Ok.

(Dina suddenly runs to Zook)

DINA:
Zook! We have to hide in a house! They’re coming.

ZOOK:
…fuck.

DEREK:
What’s a matter?

ZOOK:
We have to hide in a house. Now!

CHRIS:
Why?

ZOOK:
You don’t know? The aliens are about to march through here. Hundreds of them. And some of them are going to be flying by in ships and space shuttles. If we stay outside, no matter how hidden we are, they’ll find us. We have to hide in a building and pray to fucking christ that they don’t check inside of it.

CHRIS:
That sounds ridiculous!

DEREK:
I’ve never seen that many of them in one place before.

RILEY:
It could be true.

ZOOK:
Listen to me. If you all want to live, come with us. We’ll hide in a house for a few hours, and hope that they just pass through.

(Derek, Chris and the rest pause, unsure)

ZOOK:
COME ON!

(they hurry to one of the houses that are nearby. Both groups run upstairs)

ZOOK:
Alright, we’ll split up into several rooms. Close the window blinds. Have your guns ready in case they do come in here, but sit down, lay on the floor, it doesn’t matter, just stay quiet! This will take a while.

DEREK:
Are you sure you know what you’re talking about?

ZOOK:
I do. Trust me. We’ve lost a lot of people due to this happening before.

DEREK:
So you can survive this? Are they sweeping the area?

ZOOK:
Kind of. They’re mostly just marching and pointing lights at everything outside. I’ve never seen them go into a lot of buildings. I think they expect to spook people into running out in the open.

HASSIE:
(examining her gun)Or they’re just too lazy to check buildings.

ZOOK:
Could be. But hopefully it’ll work in our favor.

DEREK:
Riley, let’s stay together in a room.

RILEY:
Yeah, agreed.

CHRIS:
(looks at a room)I’ll go in this one. Any of you can come with me.

ASHLEY:
(referring to herself and Rosalyn)We’ll go in a room that Hassie isn’t in.

HASSIE:
(rolls eyes)Typical.

(Cut to Chris, Rosalyn, Ashley, Arin, Nicholas, and a few people in Zook’s group in one room)

ASHLEY:
I’m scared.

ROSALYN:
Me too.

CHRIS:
We’ll be fine. Just stay quiet.

(In another room, Derek, Riley, Hassie, Zook, Dina, and the rest of Zook’s group are staying quietly. Derek goes over to the window blinds to see all of the aliens outside)

RILEY:
Be careful.

(Derek hesitates, then slowly lifts up a small part of the blinds to see outside)

DEREK:
Holy…shit.

(There are several hundreds of them marching with their guns in hand, as a dozen ships are flying by, with big spotlights on the ground, checking everywhere)

DEREK:
You weren’t kidding.

ZOOK:
Obviously. It’s dangerous. I wasn’t expecting them to be here at this time. They must be doing this type of thing everywhere.

DINA:
Maybe they think everyone’s dead, and after this they’ll leave the planet for good.

ZOOK:
Wishful thinking.

DINA:
Well, we might get lucky.

DEREK:
Yeah. A little luck wouldn’t hurt any of us right now. (pauses) So, Zook, how did you form your little, uh…group together?

RILEY:
Yeah, you all seem really prepared for…well, everything.

ZOOK:
The first few days weren’t easy. And they were the worst. But we just kept meeting people and joining together like a club. A lot of people died, a lot of mistakes were made. (looks at Dina and smiles) Everyone I know now is here because they’re tough.

DINA:
We shouldn’t put anyone down. I lost a lot of my friends. It’s hard to live in the world with all this shit.

ZOOK:
Of course.

RILEY:
It is hard. Living here, and losing all of the people you know. And everyone that they took…we don’t even know what happened to them, or where they are. I hope they’re ok.

DINA:
Yeah. I had my parents and an older brother. Wherever they are, I hope they’re still kicking and ain’t too worried about me.

ZOOK:
I don’t give a shit about my family. Never had much of one to begin with. Past two years of my life, I’ve been living with my friend and his parents. Heh, and he died in this, too.

DEREK:
….yeah.

(Cut to dawn, the sky is orange and the area around the house is barren. The aliens are gone. Cut to Derek looking out the window inside.

DEREK:
Ok, it’s definitely safe.

HASSIE:
Are you sure?

ZOOK:
They’ve been gone for hours. We’re good now.

(a few knocks are heard on their door)

CHRIS:
Come out, I think we’re safe now!

(Cut to everyone slowly walking out of the front door and looking around)

CHRIS:
Yeah, I think we’re ok now.

DEREK:
The rest of the group is probably worried sick about u-

(suddenly, Zook hits Derek in the back of the head with his gun, making him fall to the ground)

RILEY:
DEREK!

(Zook, Dina and everyone else point their guns at Chris’ whole group)

ZOOK:
Your guns! Drop them! Now!

CHRIS:
What the fuck is this?!

NICHOLAS:
They tricked us! You fuckers aren’t going to get away with this!

ZOOK:
Guns! Now! Or we’ll shoot you!

(As Derek lays on the ground, he sees Chris, Hassie and Nicholas lay their guns down)

ASHLEY:
(struggling, with 2 of the guys grabbing her arms)Get off me!(they shove her to the ground)

DINA:
Don’t move, fuckers!

ZOOK:
If anyone tries to fight in any way, we’ll put a bullet in your head without question!

DEREK:
Riley, are you alright?!

RILEY:
I’m fine!

GUY IN ZOOK’S GROUP:
Shut up!

CHRIS:
(pants) Alright, alright, everyone just relax. What is it that you want?

ZOOK:
You wouldn’t begin to understand. All of you are coming with us.

DINA:
These are some good-looking girls. The guys are going to enjoy them.

ZOOK:
….they probably will.

DEREK:
What…what, rapists?! Is that what you fucking monsters are?! Just a bunch of rapists?! What the fuck is this?!

(Zook calmly leans down and looks Derek in the eye)

ZOOK:
That’s not what this is.

DEREK:
You pathetic piece of shit. You’re just wanting to fuck girls before you die.

ZOOK:
No. No. I’m trying to re-populate the earth, so the human race has a chance.

(Derek and the rest just look at him in horror)

(to be continued)
