They Came and Went
Episode 8 “Rundown”

(The outside of the cabin is seen. It’s early in the day. Cut to inside the basement. Riley and Derek are walking around, talking)

DEREK:
I’m serious Riley,  I don’t know anything about being a leader. I don’t know anything about….leader-ing stuff.

(they both sit on a couch)

RILEY:
Leadering? (giggles) I think you’ll be fine.

DEREK:
I don’t know. Arin seemed to think so. He was telling me all about seeing the future, and me stepping up. He was a brave guy.

RILEY:
Yeah….I can’t believe he’s gone. Him, and Ashley, and all those girls. I mean, I’ve seen a lot of people dying, but not……

DEREK:
I know what you mean. It still hurts. It just means we’re still normal people. Watching people you care about die…no matter how much it happens, you know, it’s just like…it’s not something you want to get numb to.

RILEY:
Yeah, that’s definitely true. But I’m really going to miss both of them.

(they both pause for a second)

DEREK:
You know, it wasn’t just me stepping up, and everything. Arin was…about to tell me a lot about the future.

RILEY:
Wow. Really?

DEREK:
Yeah. He died before he could finish what he was saying. He said something about…unexpected friends. And some other stuff.

RILEY:
Oh.

(Derek just looks at Riley and looks down uncomfortably. He doesn’t want to tell her about what Arin said about her possibly being dead. He doesn’t believe that himself)

DEREK:
Honestly though, I’m still not really sure if Arin could really have psychic abilities, or future telling, or whatever it was he had.

RILEY:
I believed him.

DEREK:
Well, HE definitely believed him. (laughs) But still. When he was dying, he didn’t talk about himself or ask me anything. He just…kept telling me about what he saw. It was really selfless, no matter what.

RILEY:
Well maybe…if he sees you being a good leader…it’s just that he believes it can happen. It should happen, because you can do that.

DEREK:
Ok, ok, I get it. You guys want me to be the new leader. And Chris certainly doesn’t want to be anymore. I think he’s…changed. What happened yesterday really took a toll on him.

RILEY:
Oh, I haven’t talked to him since yesterday. Is he ok?

DEREK:
I don’t know.

RILEY:
(gets up)Me and him are pretty good friends, maybe I could-

DEREK:
Riley, I wouldn’t. He’s….he just needs some space. Trust me. It’s a guy thing.

RILEY:
Oh, ok, I guess.

DEREK:
I’m not saying stop being his friend(smiles)…just, he’ll come around.

RILEY:
Derek, you know I can take care of myself, right?

DEREK:
I know. You wouldn’t be here if you couldn’t. I believe in you, Riley. But dammit, I’m still you’re brother. And I can’t let you go out and get shot at every day.

RILEY:
And, what does that mean? Am I supposed to hide every day, while you and the others risk your life? I’m not “special”.

DEREK:
Ok, fine! I just want you to be careful, that’s all. I mean, just after what happened yesterday. Chris was right. Damn, he was right about everything. Those people looked bad, and they were bad. That black guy Zook…I never saw him die. Wish I got the chance to kill him myself.

RILEY:
Careful Derek…(tauntingly holds out one of her hands and motions it talking like it’s Derek) Black guy, I wish he died, blah blah blah.

DEREK:
You know what I mean. Those people…any of them that got out of that, who knows what they’re up to now. And those girls…..and that mother fucker Shepherd piece of shit. Pardon my fucking language.

(they both smile)

RILEY:
Seriously though. I’m going to get good at using a gun.

DEREK:
Oh, I understand. After yesterday, yeah, I believe you need a gun. It’s just….

RILEY:
What?

DEREK:
Riley, I know you want to be like me, and Hassie and all of them. But it’s just…it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. Having guns and shooting down aliens and eventually…dangerous people. We’re not badasses.

RILEY:
I know that. But you’re helping and you’re doing good.

DEREK:
No, we’re not, not really. “good” would be never having to do any of this in the first place. God…I feel like I’m becoming a monster.

RILEY:
That’s not true!

DEREK:
I don’t know if we’re going to have to be. All of us…tough badass monsters with machine guns.

RILEY:
That doesn’t sound too bad.

DEREK:
This is just crazy. A few weeks ago, I was playing video games, driving around and hanging out with my buddies. Eating…dinner…with our parents. (his eyes get a little teary, and so does Riley’s) We were worried about school and what we would do with our lives. Or at least I was, you’re just a Ms. Einstein. And now, not a single thing in that matters. Because we’re here. And they’re gone. It’s difficult to remember that…through all of this shit, and what we’re doing just to survive…we’re still just kids. All of us. Just kids.

RILEY:
I know….(pauses)but strong kids.

DEREK:
Yeah….we’re definitely adapting.

(Albert is seen sitting down against the wall, smoking a blunt. Chris walks to him)

ALBERT:
What up, dog?

CHRIS:
You’re serious right now, Albert? You need to stop smoking weed.

ALBERT:
I’m fine man, I’m really fine.

CHRIS:
Yeah, well if something happens out of nowhere, you have to be able to react quickly. Are you going to be prepared for that?

(Albert continues to smoke and is looking kind of dizzy)

ALBERT:
I’m….I’m prepared for anything those aliens do.

CHRIS:
I just want you to be safe. You’ve barely been out there since we found this cabin.

ALBERT:
There’s no reason we should go back out there again, except to get supplies. We should just stay here where it’s safe.

CHRIS:
…it isn’t safe here. It isn’t safe anywhere. And it’s especially not safe if you’re high as hell. Take it easy on that bud.(walks away)

ALBERT:
Heh…bitch.

(Riley and Derek continue talking when Shea walks up to them)

SHEA:
Hey guys.

DEREK:
Hey, um, sorry, what’s your name again?

SHEA:
Shea.

RILEY:
What do you need?

SHEA:
Um, everyone was wanting to have a group meeting.

DEREK:
Oh, right, yeah sure.

(cut to everyone being together in the middle of the basement and talking)

NICHOLAS:
We should probably take Arin out soon. Go ahead and bury him.

CHRIS:
With all of those aliens outside? It could be dangerous. Plus, we just got back.

NICHOLAS:
Well I don’t know man. I mean, it’s not like we can bury him close to the cabin. If the aliens see the grave, they might decide to look in here. Before we know it, they see the basement. We can’t risk that.

HASSIE:
He’s right. And we have to bury Arin. That guy helped us get out of that shithole hell yesterday. Plus, he was my friend. He was yours too, Chris.

CHRIS:
I know, and I want to bury him too. Just without risking lives.

SHEA:
Everything we do risks lives.

TIMMY:
Actually, I’m not sure about this. You know, I don’t want to die just to bury a friend.. That means…more friends get buried…and more people, like, ok, you get my meaning here?

SHEA:
Oh come on sweetie, don’t be a wimp.

TIMMY:
I just don’t want to get killed. Nor do I want you to get killed.

SHEA:
Arin was a good guy. He deserves this.

TIMMY:
I guess you’re right. I just don’t want to be out there for too long.

KIM:
Yeah. All of us together…walking a mile and back. If aliens see us, what are we going to do? Half of us don’t even know how to use guns.

HASSIE:
We’re burying him no matter what. All of you don’t have to be there.

(a few of them look down in sadness)

HASSIE:
Alright, so what’s the plan? We need to come up with one today. And soon.

DEREK:
Well for one thing, do we know what we’re going to do with the body? Are we going to bury it?

HASSIE:
Yeah.

DEREK:
We could always burn it.

CHRIS:
Smoke would get aliens’ attention.

DEREK:
Oh, right.

TAYLOR:
Plus the smell of smoke. Who knows if they have more heightened senses than we do.

CHRIS:
They could have worst senses than us.

DEREK:
Maybe, maybe not. We need to figure out the facts of this situation. A…Arin needs to be buried. B…it needs to be soon. And C…near here probably isn’t a good place to do it. So, to me, that just means that we take the body out, and bury it. If there’s aliens, we kill them. Simple as that.

CHRIS:
But what if there’s another army? Like the ones we saw.

TIMMY:
What do you mean?

HASSIE:
Oh, you guys don’t know? They’ve been walking in armies now. And ships.

TIMMY:
Ok, yeah. I liked him, but I don’t want to die. Sorry.

CHRIS:
Yeah sure, you’ll just stay and hide while me and everyone else do all the dirty work.

DEREK:
Chris!

SHEA:
Hey, don’t say that to us! We have done plenty to help!

CHRIS:
Uh-huh, yeah sure.

TAYLOR:
Wait, what’s that supposed to mean? You think that because we stayed here that we’re cowards?

CHRIS:
No, I just…

KIM:
Yeah, we’ve all been through the same amount of shit as all of you.

CHRIS:
Now that’s bullshit, ok? That’s just bullshit. If you saw half of what me, Derek and the others witnessed when we were captured by those crazy people, you would ball up in a corner and cry.

SHEA:
Oh, you mean the way you did yesterday with those beers? Sitting by yourself? Super wasted? Is that why you gave up and let Derek, a guy we barely know, take your place?

CHRIS:
You don’t understand the least of it! Ask this girl Tara. (to Tara) Hey Tara! Why don’t you explain to these people the place that you were trapped in. All those horrible people, and those girls that were just shot down?!

(Tara just looks blankly at Chris)

DEREK:
Hey come on Chris, she doesn’t want to talk about that. No one does, and you know that.

CHRIS:
I don’t know anything! What I do know is that I risked my life night and day, got beaten nearly to death, watched one of my friends bleed to death, and you don’t want to honor him because you all are so scared to step foot out of this cabin. You all want to just hide, and hide, and eat the food and drinks I have been bringing you, at my own risk. Me, Hassie, Nicholas, and yes, even Derek, the new guy! (to Shea) He’s done more than you and your boyfriend could fathom. Don’t question my decision to appoint him as a leader!

SHEA:
Yeah, right, because you were such a great leader, letting people die and giving up after a few days of being one.

HASSIE:
Hey, none of that is his fault!

SHEA:
Then whose fault is it?! No, you insisted on getting more and more supplies, claiming just on your own guess that it would be harder if we wait. Maybe if you weren’t obsessed with going out all the time, Arin and Ashley would still be alive!

HASSIE:
That is BULLSHIT!

TAYLOR:
Is it?

RILEY:
Everyone…we might need to keep it down, in case they hear us.

DEREK:
She’s right, everyone needs to settle down.

SHEA:
Settle down? Why, because I’m scared?! I’m scared, me and my boyfriend are cowards, that’s what Chris is saying. Maybe, to prove I’m not scared of those freaks above us, I should keep screaming really loud.

CHRIS:
(grinning)Oh man, look at you, look at you. Threatening other people’s safety just to make some point. And this is why I’m single.

SHEA:
I couldn’t imagine any girl would want to be with you, control freak!

(Chris bows)

DEREK:
Alright, have we had enough?

NICHOLAS:
Yeah, maybe we should chill out, guys.

SHEA:
And what about Ashley?! How come Arin gets a funeral and not her?!

CHRIS:
We already told you what happened yesterday! She was a traitor!

SHEA:
She was a teenage girl! Like me! She probably did what she did because she was scared! You don’t get to call her a traitor!

CHRIS:
She IS a traitor because she betrayed our group and would’ve let us die just to save her own neck! And scared? How do you think ALL OF US feel?! She deserved what she got, that’s why I-(pauses)

DEREK:
Chris!

SHEA:
What?! Why you WHAT?!

CHRIS:
…..that’s why that when I saw her corpse laying on the ground, I didn’t care.

(Chris turns behind him to see Rosalyn a few yards away, sitting in a corner, hugging her knees. They make eye-contact, and Chris turns back with a regretful look)

SHEA:
Well, you already made that abundantly clear. I was about ready to hear you say you killed her yourself!

(Chris continues to remain silent, but gives Shea a dark glare. It almost scares her)

CHRIS:
And. What. If. I. Did?

SHEA:
What?

CHRIS:
What if I did kill her myself? Since she betrayed us. What if I did, huh Shea? What would you do about that? You know, hypothetically?

(the group is silent for a moment)

SHEA:
If you did…if you did that…then since you are the not the leader anymore, and Derek is, maybe we should vote you out, maybe even kill you, because YOU would be the traitor.

DEREK:
Everyone, SHUT UP!

(they all eye Derek)

DEREK:
Listen to yourselves. Look, the reason we’re arguing right now is because we’re all different. We all came from different places and backgrounds. Most of you didn’t even know each other before this started, and maybe…you wouldn’t want to. Maybe some of you wouldn’t want to be friends. So what? You think that matters now? Because it doesn’t. All we have are each other, and the things we can work together to achieve. That’s it. So whatever…differences, you each have, whatever grudges you’re holding, because this person did this or they did that. As the new leader, I’m saying right now…anything about each other you don’t like, if you can’t calmly debate about it, then swallow it whole right now, because what’s up there is the threat, and we can’t afford to have distractions.

RILEY:
Well said.

NICHOLAS:
Yeah.

DEREK:
(smiles proudly)…ok, now this is what’s happening. We’re burying Arin today, in 2 hours. We’ll travel roughly a mile away, and bury him. We dig up a hole, and place him in it. Anyone that wants to come, do so, anyone that doesn’t…don’t.

SHEA:
You’re right. None of this fighting matters. Thanks Derek, you already are a better leader. (she and Chris give one last glare at each other)

DEREK:
Alright…I think that settles this discussion.

(Cut to later. Everyone that’s wanting to go to Arin’s funeral are grouping up)

CHRIS:
Ok, me, Derek, Riley, Hassie, and Nicholas are all going. Who else?

TARA:
I’ll go.

CHRIS:
Are you sure? You know, you don’t really have an obligation…

DEREK:
Yeah, you should probably rest.

HASSIE:
Guys…let her make her own decision.

DEREK:
Oh, yeah, sorry.

TARA:
(pauses)….when I was in that cell, locked with my friends…and I saw…the things that asshole did…to them…to me…I wanted to kill him. More than anything. I wanted him to die….for everything he did. It didn’t matter…if it got me killed to do it, or anyone else. That’s what I was thinking when I took your knife, Derek. But Arin…he was the one who, in those brief moments, talked some sense into me. He was yelling…and it just reminded me of things. People...people that were scared and alone in this planet, and needed help. You, all of you. It brought me back. And those girls I was with. I should have never thought about risking their lives. We were in that together. We needed to get out and live. I just wish…we could’ve saved them all, too.

(Derek and everyone look at her in understanding and heartbreak)

TARA:
Arin did that. That’s why I’m going.(joins with the group of people)

CHRIS:
…anyone else?

(a moment of silence. Shea is walking up from behind Timmy)

TIMMY:
Yeah, ya know, it’s way too dangerous out there, and me and my girlfriend are going to sit this one out. But please, be safe.

SHEA:
(walking by Timmy and smacking his arm)Come on!

TIMMY:
Well, she’s my girlfriend, so I guess I’m going.

DEREK:
Is there anyone else?

ROSALYN:
I’m going.

CHRIS:
Oh, really?

ROSALYN:
Yeah. I want to be there for Arin…and also try to pay my respects for Ashley. She was still my friend.

HASSIE:
Yeah(smiles), you should.

DEREK:
You know, we’ll protect you. Keep you safe.

ROSALYN:
Thanks.

CHRIS:
Is that everyone?

(the people who aren’t going just remain)

ALBERT:
Yeah…be careful.

CHRIS:
Always.

(they head out, carrying Arin’s corpse that’s wrapped up. It’s nearing the afternoon)

(the aliens are still seen hiding from the cabin not far away)

ALIEN #1:
Cllk cllk.(Should we go after them?)

ALIEN #2:
Clllllk-clllllk-clllk(…no. They’ll come back. They’re burring a friend, don’t you see? We’ll wait until they come back, until the night time, when they’re all probably asleep and at their weakest. That’s when we’ll shoot them all.)

ALIEN #1:
Clllllk(I’m just getting tired of waiting.)

ALIEN #2:
Cllllk(We have to be patient.)

(Cut to later in the day, in a jungle-like area. A hole in the ground for Arin has been buried and his corpse lays inside the hole. Everyone is standing around it)

DEREK:
Arin….I didn’t know you very well, but from the little time I spent around you, you seemed very funny. And being able to tell the future is, I’m sure, a uh, a very special gift to have. You were a good guy.

TARA:
This is for everyone that died yesterday. For Ashely…and Arin, and all of the girls I was with. Samantha…..Alice….Jesse…Wendy…and Michelle. All of you should be alive right now, with us. But I know that…you all experienced so much pain. Everyone does. (pauses, tears up)But you’re all in a better place. I hope that you’re all happy and at peace.

HASSIE:
You know, we really should have more than one body. I wish we could bury all of you. I wish…there was more time, to dig holes at least. But I think you’re all being buried together, in a way. And hopefully, you’ll all see each other again in heaven…and be together there, too. Here…this is for all of you. (pulls a pretty necklace out of her pocket) This belonged to my mother. It was the only thing I had time to get when the…the shit happened. It’s the most important thing to me. But I want it to be with you. (she lays it beside Arin’s corpse)

RILEY:
I don’t even know what to say. You all gave such beautiful speeches. Arin, you were very nice to me. Ashley too. And all of you girls, as well. I’m…I’m really not good at this, and I don’t want to say anything that’s awkward to your memory, especially after those other speeches, but….I’m going to think about you all for a long time. I’m happy none of you are in any pain any more, and wish that you’re all in an afterlife and really happy. Yeah. Pretty much what Hassie said. Ok.

DEREK:
(to Rosalyn)Anything you want to say?

(Rosalyn shakes her head)

DEREK:
Chris?

CHRIS:
I’m good.

DEREK:
…anyone?

(Shea shakes her head)

TIMMY:
We just wanted to be here.

(they start shoveling the dirt back in)

(Later, the group is traveling back. Chris glances at Shea and looks down. He looks like he might regret some of the things he said. Tara stops abruptly)

TARA:
Guys…wait.

HASSIE:
What?

TARA:
I’m not going back. I can’t.

DEREK:
What are you talking about?

TARA:
My sister, and brother. They were in another city. I’m going to try and find them.

HASSIE:
Then we’ll go with you!

TARA:
No, you guys need to figure out your own shit. I don’t want you following me.

DEREK:
Tara, you can’t be serious. Stay with us. Please, we need you with us. If you’re on your own…out there….look, I understand wanting to find family. But it’s not worth killing yourself over.

TARA:
That didn’t stop you and Riley, did it?

DEREK:
…no it didn’t. But Tara…

TARA:
Please. Don’t make this difficult. I know you’re worried about me and everything, but it’s ok. I’m good on my own.

SHEA:
It’s her decision. You should go if you want to, but you’re welcome to come back and stay with us.

TIMMY:
Yeah.

RILEY:
Yeah, definitely. We’ll probably be staying for…how much longer?

CHRIS:
A few days at least.

TARA:
Yeah…thanks. But it’s not just that. It’s just….after seeing those people I was with, I just…don’t want to be in another group right now. (pauses) You know, the thought of dying alone isn’t as bad as watching other people you care about getting shot while you watch, unable to do anything about it. Don’t let that happen to you guys. Don’t ever give up.

DEREK:
Same to you.

RILEY:
Yeah…be as careful as you possibly can. I believe in you.

TARA:
Thanks Riley.

CHRIS:
Take it easy. And….sorry if I came off as…mean.

TARA:
It’s ok, I understand. You do what you have to survive now. Well, I guess I’m gonna go.(turns around to leave)

DEREK:
Wait!

TARA:
Yeah?

DEREK:
You said they’re in another city. Do you have plans for how you’re going to travel or anything?

TARA:
Just gonna make due with what I have.

DEREK:
We’ve explored a big chunk of this area, and haven’t found a single car that wasn’t destroyed.

TARA:
I can use a bike…or a motorcycle. Plus, there’s probably some cars out there. No way all of them are destroyed.

DEREK:
Yeah.

TARA:
Ok.

DEREK:
Just stay safe out there, ok? Please. You tell yourself, every day, every second…you will make it. You will live and find your family, because there’s no other option. Ok? Do you promise you’ll do that?

TARA:
(smiles) I promise.

DEREK:
Alright.

TARA:
See you in another life. And good luck.

(Tara leaves)

HASSIE:
Did ya have a thing for her or something?

DEREK:
…no. She lost everyone in her group yesterday.

CHRIS:
Yeah.

DEREK:
I know what that feels like.

(they leave)

(Cut to the cabin. It’s now night time. Hassie, Shea, Timmy, and Nicholas are playing a card game. Rosalyn is laying on her sleeping bag, looking sad. Albert continues sitting by himself and smoking weed. Chris is vigorously doing push ups. Derek is walking around when he sees Riley)

RILEY:
Hey.

DEREK:
Hey.

RILEY:
Those things you said today…to Tara. I’m sure she appreciated that.

DEREK:
Yeah, well, I just hope it helped her in some way. She’s had it really rough.

RILEY:
Yeah, I couldn’t imagine what she went through.

DEREK:
That’s a good thing, though. We’re not supposed to understand.

(Riley nods)

DEREK:
You’re right. About what you said this morning. I’m going to figure out how to be a good leader.

RILEY:
That’s great! And um, whatever I can do to help, just tell me.

DEREK:
We all have to work together. …I don’t believe these aliens are ever going to leave this planet. We have to worry about hiding from them.

(outside of the cabin, about 12 aliens are standing together. The 2 that were watching the cabin, and 10 more assisting them. They’re planning the attack)

ALIEN #1:
Clllllk cllllk.(Ok, most of them are still awake, but their guard will still be down. They think they’re safe right now. We go in and shoot every last one of them. Let’s go.)

(suddenly, machine guns go off, and bullets hit all of the aliens. A few of them scream and try to shoot what’s killing them, but the bullets keep flying and going through their bodies. Within seconds, all of the aliens drop dead)

(back at the cabin, everyone is alerted to the noise)

NICHOLAS:
What the hell was that?!

RILEY:
That’s probably aliens!

DEREK:
Wait, no. Everyone, remain calm! Stay in the basement. Those shots didn‘t go in this direction…and they weren’t laser guns.

(Back outside, 4 people covered in strike force armor, including black face masks, walk to the alien bodies. They’re all holding machine guns. They start removing their masks…it’s 3 guys and a tall blond girl. Her name is RENEE. The other 3 are STRAHOVSKI, DELANEY, and JUSTIN.)

STRAHOVSKI:
They were all grouped together like they were planning an attack. What were they doing?

RENEE:
Most of them were looking at that cabin.(points to it)

STRAHOVSKI:
Huh.

JUSTIN:
That cabin over there? But why?

RENEE:
Something’s in it.

JUSTIN:
Like what?

RENEE:
….other survivors.
