Owen finds out the truth... but is it too late?

“Good afternoon, Waverly High. This is your principal, Mrs. Allen speaking. I’m sure you’ve all seen the atrocities hanging in our hallway, defacing the good name of one of our students. I would like to read you an article posted by the New Jersey Times, an accredited newspaper.”

I look down at the sheet in my hands, as she reads the same words. “Glenfield, New Jersey had always been a quiet town and it’s high school was considered one of the best in the state. That is, until disaster struck, leaving three of its students facing jail time and one other in critical condition.”

“On June 20th, Gabriel McAdams, 18, was beaten severely by two of his classmates. This was not a random act of violence: it was blatant homophobia at work. McAdams was openly homosexual and this fact was well known in his school; the two students being tried for his assault had previously sent threatening messages and had vandalised his property. But on June 20th, things got much worse.”

“Andrew Gilford and Rodney Bevans, both 17 and both on the football team, cornered McAdams in the locker-room after gym class. They proceeded to punch, kick and stab the 5’1’’ victim repeatedly, witnesses say. Though there were no fewer than five witnesses, the brutal attack went on for over ten minutes.”

“ ‘It was horrible,’ said Ashely Kirwin, 16, ‘They just kept punching him until he fell to the ground. He was no match for them. Then they pulled out the knife…’”

“After McAdams had been stabbed twice in the abdomen, witnesses say Matthew Hancox, 18 and a friend of McAdams, entered the room.”

“ ‘He was so brave,’ an unnamed source told us, ‘He just took the two guys on, not even caring that he could get hurt.’ Witnesses say Hancox disarmed Bevans, who had been wielding the knife, before restraining him. Isaac Connelly, 18, restrained Gilford until the police were called in.”

“McAdams is still in critical condition at Sunny Glen Hospital. Severe internal bleeding, a collapsed lung, 7 broken ribs and facial trauma are among his injuries. Bevans and Gilford, though they are 17, will be tried as adults in the aggravated assault of Gabriel McAdams. Hancox, for minor injuries sustained by Bevan, will stand trial for common assault, though the judge is expected to be lenient.”

“That is the true account of what happened concerning the charges against Mr. Hancox. Those who were responsible for soiling this young man’s good name will be dealt with not only by the school but also the authorities. I hope this has cleared up a few issues for all of you. That will be all,” she concludes.

I looked over at Megan, who had visibly blanched. So it was her. She frantically grabbed her books, shoved them in her purse and ran for the door. Two armed police officers and Mrs. Allen were waiting for her. Just like in all those cop movies, the police turned her around and handcuffed her, reading her Miranda rights. Kicking and screaming, she was dragged out of the classroom. Then everything was silent; it was deafening.

Looking up, I realized all eyes were on me. What had just happened suddenly hit me full force. I leapt from my seat and ran into the hall, towards Matt’s locker. Not there. I ran to American History, he class he was supposed to be in. Not there either. Running out into the parking lot in the last desperate attempt to find him, I didn’t see his car anywhere. I dialled his number of my cellphone with shaky fingers. “Please pick up,” I willed out loud.

“You have reached the voice mail box of…” an automated voice told me, before I hung up.

“Shit!” I yelled, throwing my hands over my head. What do I do now?
