That Mistake, These Regrets
A chilly wind attacks the window panes
Outside on the street it silently rains
A scrawny figure sits perched on the window seat
With nothing but a sheet to provide her heat
Her hair is limp, her eyes bloodshot
She looks as though shes begun to rot
Silver scars mark her thin arms
Long gone is her youthful charm
Her body rocks back and forth in muted prayer
In her arms she holds a dark-hair, light-eyed toddler
Night painfully fades, morning eventually arrives
Still she sits and waits, as though for the dead to rise
At 7 am his key scrapes the lock, a hooded figure stumbles in
And with him the dirty stench of alcohol from his skin
He mumbles an apology and gestures for an embrace
Looking away, she hides the disgust from her face
Shrugging absently, he collapses onto the mattress
Fueling her hatred, she's driven by madness
What happened to their bright future?
When did life become so sour, so bitter?
He promised her security and a home
Didn't mention the nights when he would roam
She left everything; her family and friends
To be with him, their love to defend
She lost everything, hope and belief
Her life she lives, choking in grief
