“Come on Aaron!” Tawny called as she ran down the hill to the swing set below. Her brown hair was blowing in the cool night breeze that was lightly gracing the hot summer atmosphere. Her brown eyes turned back to look at him and he had almost caught up to her when he tripped and fell flat on his face with an “umph.” She stopped and her breath caught in her chest, but she couldn’t help but laugh as she saw him struggle to get up.
“Come on, you oaf!” She took off again, not needing to look back to know that he had risen from his embarrassing fall and was coming after her again.
“Do you realize that you are the most bothersome girl that I have ever met?” He said out of breath as he reached the swing set.
“Oh, don’t get your britches in a bunch.” She laughed as she started to swing. The air ran passed her face and she took a deep breath and let pure happiness pass over her. Tawny pumped her legs harder and harder until she was going as high as she could possibly go. She looked next to her and noticed that Aaron had taken a seat in the swing next to her and was gently moving.
“Oh come on, Aaron, have fun.” She said, pumping her legs harder and faster.
“I can’t afford to have fun. Fun cost money. Money I don’t have. Money I would have if I could get that job bagging groceries at Jim’s Deli.”
“Ugh, do we have to talk about it? That job is going to Gabe Riley, anyway.”
“Who says?” Aaron asked.
“Everybody in town! You know that he’s dating Jim’s daughter, Irene.”
“No,” he said aghast. He gave her a devious smile and got out of his swing and walked behind her. He started pushing her from the back.
“Wee!” She proclaimed as she went higher still.
“Yes,” she said. “You know, we need breaks from the real life like this. Just like we’re kids again. Gossiping and such.” Tawny told him.
“Yeah,”
“Wait, this can’t be fun for you,”
“It’s great watching you have fun, Tawns.”
“Well, won’t you fly with me?”
“Fly? This is a little far from flying.” He told her giving her a huge push.
“Whoosh!” She exclaimed again with a laugh. Aaron grinned, happy to see just how excited she was over something as simple as a swing set. She was like that though. You could show her a puppy and she would be enthralled for a whole day.
“It might be as close as I’m going to get tonight.” She lowered her feet down to dig them into the ground dragging herself to stop.
“No, it won’t.” He told Tawny as he walked in front of the swing. He placed his arm in front pulling the swing to a slow halt and his green eyed gaze drifted down to her.
He lowered his mouth to hers and tasted her sweet lips. They tasted like strawberries.
He felt like flying with her tonight. Just spreading his wings and looking to the sky and flying with her. Tawny Henrietta Baskerville could make this grown man jump in the air and ride the wind because she was that beautiful, that powerful, and that wonderful.
See, we’re chasing stars,” He whispered in her in her ear as he brushed kisses along her jaw. He kissed her mouth again and she wrapped her arms around his neck and played with the hair at his nape.
“Let’s fly to Neverland.” Tawny told him. “Peter Pan and Wendy turned out fine.”
He chuckled into her hair and gently took her face in his hands. “Tawny,”
She looked up at him with a faithful smile on her face.
“I was gonna wait until we were somewhere more romantic, but I think this works.” He dug into his pocket and pulled out a small ring. Her breath caught in her chest as her hands ran to her throat.
“I love you Tawny. I’ve loved you the moment that I laid eyes on you that day that you sat next to me in calculus class. You are my whole world. I want to spend the rest of the life with you. I want you to be mine forever.”
“I love you Aaron.”
“Please do me the honor of being my wife.”
“Forever!” She exclaimed as she stuck out her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger. She jumped up from the swing and tackled him onto the ground. “I love you Aaron Macintosh.”
“And I love you. I will love you forever.” She kissed him then. Their lips melted together as her hands played with his hair. He laughed against her mouth as he ran his fingers through her thick brown hair. “So, yes?”
“Yes!” She yelled and kissed him again. “Come on, let’s go home and celebrate!”
“I agree.” He said. “You have to get off me first.”
“Right.” She rolled off him landing on the ground with a soft thump. She stood up and reached down toward to him. “Come on. Let’s go.”
“So, you still think the swing was as close as you got to flying tonight?” Aaron asked her as he took her hand and started walking.
“No, I haven’t even made my crash landing yet.”
“Who says it has to be a crash landing?” He asked.
“Because I’m so high that I will be coming down so fast,”
“But I will be right down here to catch you, baby girl.”
“You promise?” She asked as she spun around.
“Forever and ever.”
