I wrote this thinking of what Joseph Carey Merrick, more commonly known as the Elephant Man due to his physical deformities, felt during his lifetime. This poem is based around a quote that Merrick said, "I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am.. a man!"

Daylight.

I cannot see you.

When I do I hear

The screams of frightened women,

Or the crack of the whip.

I am a prisoner of my flesh.

I am a slave to this man.

I am an animal to him.

I am less than a lame dog on the street.

But I am not an animal!

I have dreams,

I have hopes,

I have desires!

Life is no more than the pain

Of waking to find the nightmare is real.

But I am not who they say I am!

I am not what they think me to be!

I am not an animal!

I am a human being!

I am... a man!
