Uprooted and sour,
I’ve been pushed away.
But if they only knew,
I’m not as raw as I seem.

Smooth,
But rough in every way possible.
Instead of gaunt,
I am purely bulbous.

Will you fend off the rabbits for me?
Ward off all of the ants?
Bring me forth towards the sun?
Pack fresh soil among my leaves?
And rectify me with your nurturing water?

With a tinge of salt,
I won’t be only bitter,
But a tad bit of sweet as well.

You will then engulf me.
Slowly biting into my flesh,
A look of discomfort before the first taste.
And then the swallow with enough satisfaction,
As you down me,
The radish.
