Did it hurt when they pulled the love out of you?

Did they make all kinds of incisions that refuse to scar?

They meddle with our muddled thoughts

And claim to have the keys to who we are.

And it never turned out the way it was meant to.

At the devil’s feet we gave our lives away.

And now they comes in pairs with little scalpels,

Peeling apart to our muted dismay.

But it’s the liberties we gave in giving.

Our selfish selves so bent on cheating hell.

They walk away with meat and bone and meaning,

And leave us without stories we can tell.
