These nights I don’t

sleep but two hours

or four, I gnaw at the

face of sleep, slapping

its bald head begging

it to cry on me. But it

scarcely does.

I sing into the darkness,

hymns mostly, the

black, even mouth

humming back awkward

notes, its club foot

stomping out a rhythm

I can’t quite follow—

Its an obscure song, I

can’t follow the

words, its Welch or

something like it. It sings

the same verses until I turn

away covering myself with

the morning like a

burial shroud.
