Set in the near future, the tales old men tell follows the lives of a small community recovering from decades of religious and civil war. A seemingly endless conflict that few survived. The human empire reduced down to a few isolated tribes. Fifteen years after that eternal struggle ended though, one such community, responsible in the main for helping bring peace to that old world, receive word an old enemy is on the rise…
While they prepare themselves for what is coming, the message is discovered by four teenagers who see an opportunity to finally disprove the deceit and misdirection their parents employ to protect them from the horrors of that past, and blinded by an insatiable desire for truth and justice, and completely unaware of the true extent of their ignorance, they steal a boat and go after the source…
Before too long that old enemy learns of their presence in this world and sets to hunting them down. Only their frantic parents, pursuing them in another stolen boat, can save them from the horrific nature of that impossible foe. Knowing what they know of that old world in flames, and by virtue the odds stacked against them, they consider their chances slim if nothing at all…

The community is based in a vast forest that borders the southern Atlantic. A result of coastal reforestation used almost a century ago to combat global warming and that was left to run out of control following that great upheaval. Employing a mix of old world technologies and new world ideals, the community use barter and trade as currency. Based on liberal ideals and a practical need to increase numbers, most teenagers are sexually active and the use of drugs and alcohol is common. A life-style the younger ones have copied off their broken parents, a band of killers with the blood of countless souls on their hands…
