Grey Gardens, which has debuted recently Saturday, April 18, 2009 on HBO, chronicles the lives of “Big Edie” Bouvier Beale and “Little Edie” Beale, a mother and daughter who are both the famously eccentric relative of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Jessica Lange (Big Edie) and Drew Barrymore (Little Edie) were able to create an amicable recreation of the relationship between mother and daughter. The “Edies” were once part of high society and after years of hardship were found out to have been living at the estate in unsanitary conditions along with housemates of cats, raccoons, and fleas.

Lange has truly shined in her role, which along with Barrymore’s, carries on for forty years of both of their lives before and during their time fixated in Grey Garden. From a lovely 1930s polite housewife to a 1970s haggard loud mouthed old woman, she does a fantastic job of adapting her characters speech, song, and habits. In short, her character portrayal is absolutely uncanny.

Barrymore’s “Little Edie” is a little more expressed when compared to the true “Little Edie”. “Little Edie” encounters more inner turmoil as being the victim of the bird cage she built herself at Grey Gardens and Barrymore pinpoints the desire for being free.

Michael Sucsy wrote and director the script, with the help of Patricia Rozema to extend an in depth storyline of the original documentary “Grey Gardens” (1975). The cult-classic documentery, then Broadway musical, now HBO movie is expected to be nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Screen according to The Awards Insider of the LA Times.
