"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...", she sings to the clouds which rain outside. She's only three, and a half, but she knows that Mommy won't let her play if the sun isn't out. Her older sister thinks she is stupid, sitting there singing to the storm. Still, she believes that if she keeps singing, the rain will go away.

"You make me happy when skies are grey.", she's sixteen and her last boyfriend ditched her for a football game. She's grounded, for cutting class to make out behind the bleachers, and can't go. He said he'd bring her back a gift, but he doesn't even call. She's been up all night, waiting. The tears run down her cheeks, as she sings the old song. Somehow, she recalls, it used to do the job.

"You'll never know, dear, how much I love you...", today she's walking down the isle. A beautiful white gown flowing out behind her, and all she can think about is how she saw him eying the twenty-year old bridesmaid earlier. She flushes the doubt out of her stride, and holds the lilies tight. No one even notices how her knuckles match the tender flowers now. Her daddy pulls up the veil, as they reach their destination, and she can already see the path of ruin her life is going to take, in her new husbands eyes.

"Please don't take my sunshine away...", in the living room she cries, as the lightning streaks the skies. He's out with another woman, and he's not even got the decency to try and hide it. She's probably gorgeous, not having gained the twenty pounds from carrying his children. To have that youth, that fire again.. Wiping at her eyes, she looks out toward the sliding glass door, her own little girl waiting patiently for the torrents of wind and rain to pass... She just wants to go outside, and play for an hour. Just one hour.. Her mother picks her up and hugs her tight. Afterwards, she sits her daughter upon her lap and forgets about the rain behind her own eyes. "Wanna make the rain go away, Pumpkin?"

Her little girl nods with hope still bright in her eyes as mommy tells her, "It will only work, if you believe. Do you believe? You have to believe with all your heart, Pumpkin, and even a little more". The smile her mother shows her when she nods her head seems odd to her, even, but that thought is forgotten when her mother turns her eyes to the clouds and sings these soft, soft words..

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away. Please don't take my sunshine away...", and when she's done, well.. she sings it again. Only, this time, half way through, her daughter starts to sing along. About the fourth time, they are spot on.. and the clouds are starting to roll back, baring just the shoulder of the sun. Just a shoulder.. but its enough. The little girl springs from her mother's lap, clapping as she jumps up and down. "We did it! Rain go way! Rain go way!", she squeals as she looks back towards her mother.

"Told'ja Pumpkin.. you just have to believe."
