Managed

She gazed deeply into the mirror at a face that was all too familiar but no more welcome then a menacing vagrant on the streets. She was an enigma. To those she loved, she was a light; a testament to a life hard lived but well managed. Managed, the key word. Managed was a word she despised, a word she had heard so many damned times in her life that the very utterance of it brought the sinewy burn of acid from within the pit of her stomach to the flesh of her uvula. In all honesty "managed" was a mockery of everything she had ever lived, everything she had ever built. She had never "managed", she had survived and not all that well as claimed. Time and time again it was the same speech and she grew more and more tired as time went by. Was it not enough that she had to live with the horrors that passed through her mind? Was it not penance enough that she woke in the night fighting for her life in an inescapable hell that came in her dreams? Yes, she had lived, but to manage is to cope.. Coping was only an exterior element for her. She smiled, she laughed, she even succeeded in going through the motions of life without the need of the demons of most physical addictions but inside she was a tortured soul crying out almost constantly for the ultimate release the would be the inevitable death she had always seen within her minds eye.
