At the TSI-KA-MA-GI

Formidably rough country -

densely wooded, nearly roadless -

north-west Georgia is.

?

CHICKAMAUGA –

?

Disputed territory:

Muskogee, Choctaw, Chickasaw,

Creek,

Shawnee and Cherokee.

Allies and enemies - each by turns -

lived and hunted there,

before the lands were seized

in perpetuity

by whites moving west.

?

CHICKAMAUGA –

?

Who named it?

Debated – unsolved.

Muskogee, Choctaw, Chickasaw,

Creek,

Shawnee or Cherokee?

Turbulent history there,

a “River of Death” –

so the post-war myth goes.

Turbid this place,

“Stagnant waters” - Tsi-ka-ma-gi in Cherokee –

not a Cherokee word though –

Shawnee?

Chukko-mah-ko in Muskogean: "dwelling place of the warchief".

?

All three - too true - in the end.

?

CHICKAMAUGA? –

?

Army of the Cumberland –

fled?helter skelter

back toward Chattanooga

when General Longstreet came at them there -

at Chickamauga.

Five young men of my surname,

Provost Guard,

stood two days with General Thomas

to slow the Confederate torrent there -

at Chickamauga.

The five came home

and would not talk of it.

?

CHICKAMAUGA -

?

By whatever translation

the meaning rings true.

?

Union warchiefs –

how the mighty are fallen -

while the failure, the misfit,

and the disowned one? +

come into their own.

?

Stagnant waters for the South -

reputations enhanced by

this Phyrric victory,

prelude to disaster -

Pride preceeds a pace.? ++

?

River of Death –

so very many found it so. +++

Stygian for them, blue or grey,

there -

at Chickamauga.

?

CHICKAMAUGA –

?

Who named it?

Muskogee, Choctaw, Chickasaw,

Creek,

Shawnee or Cherokee?

Whoever –

they named it well.
