Jean Lafontaine is a successful sugarcane plantation owner in the small town of Meraux, LA. The year is 1846 and his plantation is suddenly burned to the ground, many of his slaves murdered in the process. As Jean seeks justice, he becomes the prime suspect in a rash of murders throughout the town. He attempts to clear his name by trying to uncover who the perpetrator is before the law or the towns people close in on him. The reader is sure to be shocked by the climactic ending.
