Betrayal from the person that you would least expect. It often happens that way, doesn't it?

I wonder if it even bothers you, because it bothers me a lot.
In fact, I've been sitting here thinking about what happened for the longest time,
trying to put my finger on the right word to describe you, or at the very least to describe your actions.

(A poet's dilemma, indeed)

I remember this one time,
talking and laughing,
sitting at our usual place
talking about our usual topics.

This guy walked in with a girl,
presumably his girlfriend
and proceeded to act like he owned the place.
Presumably to impress the broad.

I remember your smirk
and the underlying resentment towards that man.
You chastised his behavior harshly,
rather than just laughing it off.

You were scouting the competition.

But now as the haze of friendship clears into the sunny truth
you can't hide from the light's revealing rays.
You are that man,
except you thrust yourself in the opposite direction.

You "care" with a sharp eye on how it advances your cause.
Pity is your closest friend.
One that you manipulated,
just as you manipulated me.

You were good at it, too.
Covered, with the smoke that came from your mouth,
now I'm on the bottom.
Where are you?

Phony

(The dilemma has ended)
