A middle-aged guy is traped in a dark, cold room. There is no escape... or is there, no light, no one to get help from. He discovers that life isn't anything without problems, friends, family, etc. basically just yourself. This is a great moral for young readers.

Us Without You:

Where the Earth sees no more is a place of darkness and dread. A place that is weary and dead. Look forward I see, I see this place of death. It is cold and dark. My fate is pounding in my head. Over and over again I’m dying of guilt. I want this evil guilt to go away. I wish I have done better, but I also know I chose to live that way. The consequences were true, the pain is real, the guilt thereafter is true. Tell me how to leave this place. Wait… I see a light. I walk towards this light, now it’s gone. I sit and cry, because my help has gone away. At least I thought it was help. But no, I was wrong. Oh help me dear lord, hear my pleas. Though you don’t hear me in this pit of dread. I wish I were with you, and not the dead. Wishes are nothing without a star to look at. I only see dark, nothing I see. Am I the only one? Could there be more of this kind? Maybe I’ll yell and scream till someone finally hears me. Echo, echo, and more echoes. Could they’re scared, maybe they’re alone like me, looking for some help. Empty space, run all you want, you won’t get anywhere. There is no help, there is no escape. Yell and scream all you want, no one is here to help you. You wished for space, silence, and peace. Well here it is, your wish is granted. You wish you didn’t wish that don’t you? It is true you only live once. Use it wisely. Life is short, use every second of it for a good deed. Never let your hands and feet condemn you. Think smart. All of this I remember from when I was alive. People always told me that. Always take in good advice. Never refuse it. Boy I wish I knew this earlier. I hear a noise. It sounds like a flip of a switch. I see some lights come on. I see my world coming into view. I finally realized it was only my mind showing me what life would be without everyone, everything, every problem, every spec of light, and sad times. Coming to my mind, this world would be like that cold, dark room without any problems or people or sad times. So just remember that cold, dark room when you are feeling dreary. And always remember, without you, this world loses one light.
