The point of this work isn't what is happening in the world when things turn for worse, but what is going between us individually. What will we do for our loved ones when times looks dim? Will we ultimately sacrifice ourselves for their sake?
This piece of work is made mainly for the "Song Short Story Contest" from locoforcoco
I picked "Safe and Sound" by "Taylor Swift" as the song to base this written work. Sentences relate lyrics from the song and the overall meaning of the song can be perfectly matched to this written work.

“No! Honey, don’t do this to me. Please don’t…” David burst into tears. In his arms was his thirteen year old daughter. He moved her into his arms with distress. Her daughter squealed in pain as blood gushed from her stomach.“You have to live, don’t do this to me baby girl!” Her white T-shirt started clinging to her wound like a wet towel on a bath tile floor. David kneeled right in the middle of the kitchen floor with his daughter laying in his arms.

“It hurts! It's so hard to breathe. Please don’t leave me here Daddy.” Chantal begged.

David’s voiced clamped up, fresh tears fell from his bloodshot eyes. “I am not going anywhere sweet pea.” Chantal moved her head in pain towards the kitchen windows. A haze of fire was seen outside. Blood splattered the walls; their blood splattered the walls.

David carried her to his silver grey Honda Civic. “Keep pressure on that wound, everything’s going to be fine sweetheart.” David drove furiously down the road. It wasn’t like he needed to follow the speed limit, there’s no need for following the law anymore.

Abandoned cars littered the streets. Red stains tainted what was once an innocent neighborhood. Bandages were tied tightly around Chantal’s abdomen, soaking up blood. David looked frantically down the road to decide which way would be quickest to the hospital. Stores with broken windows from looters and housings were all dark inside. People swarmed the streets, fires and explosions lit up the sky in monstrous bright enormities.

The city changed so dramatically in a couple of days. A molten ball of regret fused itself inside David's stomach. He knew they had a better chance of being safe if they weren't so close to a city. He didn't want things to change, he just wanted how things were before. It was so perfect, almost to the point where realism has taken placed and made their peaceful past look like a dream. David could still remember how he would come home from work, to cook for his baby girl. To take care for her, and love her. Now there is a bullet inside of her and she's miserable, all because of David. His grip tightened the steering wheel, he pressed the gas pedal down with force.

“Daddy what’s going outside?” Her wounds ripped into her, making her scowl in pain. Her own tears started irritating her eyes, making her wince in pain.

David glanced at his daughter in shame before resuming driving. He tried his best in comforting her, giving her the best charismatic smile he's got. David turned to her and said calmly, “Shh... don’t look outside, darling everything is on fir-“

A massive explosive force shook the car. Screams rattled inside the car as it tumbled over and over. Glass cringed and cracked into pieces. Cutting and scaring them both. As metal cringed and morphed, shrapnel flew into David’s eyes, blinding him. A few seconds had passed before things had settled. “Oh my god, Chantal please tell me you’re okay.” Blood trickled down from his head. A sharp pain immobilized his left arm. His left arm felt as if something was pinning him against the seat.

Chantal screamed in terror. Her wounds clearly re-opened by the sight of blood oozing from her stomach.

“What is it? Are you okay?” David cried.

Chantal started crying, tears choked her from saying anything. Chantal hesitated, what could she say?

“God dammit, answer me!” David couldn't see, he thought his little girl was unconscious or worse.

Chantal thought her situation thoroughly, she was horrified for what is in front of her. When she answered, her response sounded fake and rehearsed. “Everything is alright…” Chantal blatantly lied, nothing is alright.

David went for his seatbelt, but to his horror he found a thick metal chunk had pierced into his shoulder, bounding him to his mangled car. “Chantal … Everything is going to be alright. Listen to me; I want you to unfasten your seatbelt. And leave me-“

“No I won’t leave you.” David was caught off guard by Chantal’s outburst. “Where will I go? I can’t even…” Chantal’s voice drifted off, she knew they were hopeless. Their car was tipped upside down and in the middle of the street. They saw feet running around their car from the windows.

Gun-shots crackled nearby, highlighting the ground with their sparks. Footsteps from soldiers echoed down the street. Except these soldiers weren't going to rescue them. Cries from civilians startled David and Chantal. David’s mind raced between possible situations. Every situation held two crucial factors: luck and fate. He knew in his gut that these men cannot be trusted. Especially how barbaric they were when that soldier barged in his home and tried forcing himself on his little girl. How the soldier shot her when she tried running away.  He can’t let that happen to her, not again. Without hesitation David used his muscle memory to dig into the glove compartment, grabbing a loaded gun.

David gently grabbed Chantal behind her head, he whispered to her. “Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. You'll be alright; no one can hurt you now. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound. I promise.” David felt the gun pressed against Chantal's temple. David’s finger twitched in hesitation, his finger shook, trembling for what he was about to do.

“I love you daddy.”

“And I love you too darling.”

Suddenly a bright muzzle flash came from the destroyed upside down car. In despair, David whimpered to himself “ I promise...” Another muzzle flash came from the car.

Silence was the only thing that followed.

I had an amazing time writing this piece of work. My creative "noggin" was challenged by the song factor part of the contest. Please critic and judge to your heart's desire!

If you hadn't noticed I incorporated lyrics of the song into the story itself.

The verse: "I remember you said, "don't leave me here alone" and my line " Please don’t leave me here daddy."

Another example is: "When all those shadows almost killed your light" I used a man driven by madness and lust as the "shadow" that almost killed Chantal.

or the verse: "Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire" and my line: “Shh... don’t look outside, darling everything is on fir-" (Before they were hit with an explosion.)

One of the major examples is the ending where in the song: "Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now" is literally placed to fit in the situation.

Lastly a metaphor was used: "Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound." was intended not as a lie but indeed a promise to meet each other in the after life as they passed away.

Heres the lyrics to the song:

I remember tears streaming down your face when I said "I'll never let you go"

When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said "don't leave me here alone"
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound.

Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby even when the musics gone, gone

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound

Just close your eyes, you'll be alright
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound

As always, have a great day! -Xivtorc
