We were in the back seat of a taxi cab on our way home from an exciting night of playing pool with our friends, laughing and reminiscing over the great time we had. That ride seemed to last forever but I loved every minute I got to spend with you before our busy work week started again. When we finally arrived at our house both of us fumbled around for a moment before stepping out. I walked to the driver and you waited for me on the side of the bright yellow cab. The headlight coming from the passing cars the kind of light that can only be found in make-up advertisements. You were so pure, so perfect, and so incredibly beautiful. Without taking my eyes off you I thanked the cab driver once more and turned to walk away. I was ecstatic; this was the night I would do it. That’s when I heard it. The screech of tires closing in, I yelled for you as loud as I could, but it was too late. The dark green pick-up truck had already swept you into the deep water filled ditch and skidded to a halt in the opposite lane. For a few seconds time froze and so did I, when it finally started again it was moving at double, even triple speed and I rushed over to you, bumping into the now open cab door. I jumped down into the murky ditch water, grabbed you by the waist and pulled you over my shoulder. I set you down on the rural country road that was now filled with the utter chaos of drivers slamming doors and yelling at each other. I looked into your eyes and although they were still filled with the same magnificent spark, love passion, and beauty that had originally drawn me to you three years earlier, they were lacking something and I knew I would never get to hear your lovely voice, or feel your gentle touch again. That is when I did what I’d wanted to do for so long. I reach into the zippered chest pocket of my favorite red wind breaker, the same place it had been ever since I’d saved the money to buy it. I pulled the small black velvet covered box, knelt down, and as I was opening it I asked if you would marry me. With tears flowing down my blushing cheeks I placed the ring on your finger and kissed you, I knew you said yes.
