I wouldn’t have been in this shitty neighborhood if Marcus, my boss, hadn’t told me to.  He had a few guys pick up somebody that had tried to double cross him, I didn’t know who it was, and I really didn’t care.  I was there to make sure he was put down and disposed of proper like.  Me and Stu, Stu Marseno, pulled up in front of the house, Stu was driving, he had insisted we take his care.  It was a dump that looked like a stiff wind would knock it over.  The three steps up to the porch creaked as we went up them.  The door was open and I took a quick look around before following Stu inside.

“They should be waiting for us in the basement.”

“The basement, God damnit, working by flashlight digging a freaking hole is going to be a real pain.”

“No there is power, just no lights up here.”  He told me as he pushed the basement door open and flicked on the light.

I led the way down and saw the place was packed full of broken furniture and junk.  “Where are they?”

“They should be in the back.”

I weaved my way through the garbage towards the back.  Something felt off about this, but I ignored that feeling and just walked on.

“I guess this is a good spot.  Get on your knees Joey, hands behind your head.”

I turned around to see Stu holding his gun, it wasn’t pointed at me, but close enough, that I did what he said.

“Your piece, lose it and make sure to use your left hand.”

I had no choice, so I reached over and pulled my gun out and tossed it into the garbage.

Stu raised his gun and pointed it at me, at my face.  “Hands behind your head.”

I have to say that looking up at the barrel of the gun it looked huge, big enough to stick my head into.  I was on my knees with my hands behind my head and my friend was holding the gun.  Well I guess we weren’t friends anymore since he was about to blow my head off.  It took all my will power to look beyond the barrel at his smirking face.  “Well Joey you were warned.  Guess this is it.”  His finger tightens on the trigger and … nothing.  He laughs.  “Forgot to take the safety off.”

As I saw his finger move to flick off the safety I move.  I would love to say I wasn’t scared shitless, but I had just dumped a big brown stinky one in my pants.  I grabbed his hand holding the gun with both of mine forcing the barrel towards the floor as I pulled myself to my feet.  The top of my head connected with his face making him stumble backwards.  I got pulled forward as I tried to get my feet under me.  Pain shot through my ribs as he slammed his big meaty left into my side, but the pain wasn’t going to make me leave go.

Twisting his wrist, I attempted to force him to drop the gun and got another shot to the ribs for my trouble.  Stu pulled back and tripped over a stool pulling me down on top of him.  The overpowering smell of garlic hit me as his breath was force out of him right into my face.  Slamming my head into his face again breaking his nose.  Rabbit punches slammed into my side as he tried to roll me off of him.

Leaving go with my left hand I kidney punched the bastard.  Groaning his grip on the gun slipped just a bit.  Seeing this as a chance I laid a couple short hard punches into his side, but just I thought he was going to lose hold of the gun he pulled his hand free of mine.

Stu tried to raise the gun, but I grabbed his arm with both my hands and slammed it onto the cold cement floor.  The gun went sliding away from us as he lost his grip.  Another head butt and Stu’s nose was gushing blood like a fountain.  A fist to them mouth and my lip was split and I tasted blood.  We were like two kids in the school yard just trading punches, no skill no finesse until he got a lucky blow in and I started seeing stars.

Stu pushed me off of him and scrambled for the gun on all fours as I shook my head trying to clear it.  Flinging myself onto him I wrapped my arms around his waist as if my life depended on it, which it did.  I’m no light weight so with me hanging on he was going nowhere, but I could use his body to pull myself closer to the gun.  I pushed off of him, throwing myself towards the gun, my fingers grazed the butt when he grabbed my ankles.  As I was pulled away from the gun I raised my right foot and drove it into his face.  Stunned he left go giving me all the time I need to snatch the gun up.  I rolled over as I flicked the safety off.

The sound of the safety being clicked off pulled me from my day dream.

“Come on Stu, I made one mistake and…”

His finger tightens on the trigger.

“Drop the gun and put your hands in the air.”

Stu turned towards the voices with the gun still in his hand and there was a shoot.  Stu went down, and I was never so glad to see the police in my life.

The big burly detective slammed down in a chair in the interview room.  His partner a short grey-haired guy dropped a folder on the table.  It had to be five inches thick.

“Joseph ‘Joey’ Depergo do you want to tell me why one of Marcus King’s men is trying to kill another?”

“A misunderstand.”

“Don’t you get smart fuckface.”  Burly slapped the back of my head.

“Joey, you don’t mind if I call you Joey, do you?  Joey, we could release you right now, put you back on the street, do you want that?”  grey-hair asked.

“Can I get a smoke?”

“It is against the law to smoke in public buildings.”  Burly told me.

“After what I’m about to tell you I’m going to jail so what, the judge will tack on a few more years cause I smoked in a police station.  Get me a freaking smoke or release me.”

I saw it written all over their faces, they wanted Marcus, they had fucking hard-ons for the guy.  They would do anything to get him, so if I had asked to bang a hooker on the chief of detectives’ desk they would have arranged it.  Grey-hair pulled out a pack and tapped one out.

I took a long deep draw on the smoke as I decided what I was going to do.  If I sang I was dead and if I didn’t I was dead, the only difference was if I sang I hurt Marcus.  That made my mind up for me.

“It all started with a woman, most of my problems start with a woman or a drink, sometimes even both.  Her name was Tiffany Sanders and she was sexy as hell, long legs up to the tightest, firmest ass you ever seen.  She had a rack that would have made a porn starlet jealous, but she wasn’t some dump bimbo, she was smart.  The thing was she was Marcus’ girl, not his wife, that fat battle-axe, no his piece on the side.”

I saw I had them as they leaned in smiling.  They were eating it up and I could see the little red light on the video camera flickering as it recorded the whole thing.

“About six months ago Marcus’ wife was on him about something and he couldn’t just take off to pick Tiffany at the airport, so he sent me.  She had flown home to visit her folks for the holidays.  Anyways I pick her up at-“

“Just give us something to pick Marcus up and stop the God damn story already.”  Burly shouted.

“If you want me to be a rat then I have to do it my way, okay?”

“Calm down Ted, go ahead Joey.” Grey-hair said

“So where was I… Oh yeah I picked her up at the airport and was driving her to her place.  This isn’t the first time I had to pick up one of the boss’ girls, but most were gum-chewing airheads that didn’t want to talk to me.  Tiffany was different, she not only wanted to talk to me, but she had a brain.  I guess I said that already, but she was smart like she had a degree and was working in some lab or something.  Anyways she asked me up when we got back to her place.  I should have refused, I mean she was the boss’ and all, but she was sexy as fuck and really nice.

“So anyways I go up and we have a couple of drinks as we continue to talk.  Well one thing leads to another and we end up in bed together.  In truth we did it on the couch, in her little kitchen, the shower... I guess you could say we did it everywhere but the bed.  Afterwards as we are laying on the living room floor I tell her she can’t say anything to Marcus and we can never do this again.

“Let me tell you I tried to avoid doing it again, but we ended up hooking up about a week later. It became a regular thing for us and I thought we were being careful, I mean she never drove her car and I always made sure to check into the hotels under a different name.  I don’t know how Marcus figured out she was cheating on him, well is it cheating if he was cheating on his wife with her?  Doesn’t really matter just that kind of thing really bugs me.

“Now I have been with Marcus a long time, so I know he would have dumped her in time, but the cheating thing pissed him off.  It was like a slap to his face or something.  He didn’t know it was me just she was seeing somebody else also.  He called me into his office and told me all of this then ordered me to kill her.

“I’ll be honest with you, normally that wouldn’t have bothered me in the least.  I have killed women before, but I’m guess it says that in my file there.  Tiffany was different, I think I loved her.  I was caught between a rock and a hard place.  I was just glad he didn’t tell me to find the guy and kill him also.”

“You will testify to the fact that Marcus ordered you to kill her and you can tell us where to find the body.”  Ted ‘burly’ was all smiles now.

“If you think I’ll survive to testify then you are crazier then a shithouse rat.  As for the body I have no clue where it is since I let her go.  I’m guessing, but I think that is why Marcus ordered Stu to shoot me.”
