The dark line of land
clashed with the ascending sun.
It struggled and fought
but light seeped over its brim.
The valley fell silent,
the wind itself stalling.
Each Second passed brought more light
to the land
but the horizon wouldn=t break,
not even for the sun.
The air hummed with tension
a vixen paused in her hunt
squirrels ceased their quarreling
starlings stopped chirruping,
and the mute battle continued.
The sky brightened by the second
the sun creeping and wedging
hemming and hawing
squeezing and edging
between land and sky
waiting for the horizon=s back to break
the land resisted,
higher and higher
till the air was drawn taut.
The horizon was on the verge of fracturing
the fiery rim of the sun almost through...
With a titanic eruption of light
the sun=s rays lanced out across the land,
banishing the darkness
and the final remnants of night.
The vixen again pursued her prey
the squirrels resumed their squabbling
and the starlings shared their gossip.
The dawn of a new day.
