There was a gentle breeze that blew through the trees. The sun glistened on the stream that was babbling away. I heard some faint laughter, and I knew my friends were coming. Although I was glad to
see my friends, their laughter shattered the fairytale quietness of the woods.
Hi, my name is Summer. Summer Rose Lawrence. I have chocolate brown hair, and caramel coloured eyes. I look like a normal 14 year old. For the most part, I am. I love to shop and hang out with
friends. But I’m a little different too. I know what you’re thinking, and I’m dead serious. I can read minds, and move objects with my mind as well.
“Hey Summer!” called Emily, as she ran towards me.
Emily Abbey Taylor is one of my best friends. She has so much energy it’s like she’s running on those long-life batteries. As she ran, her blond hair blew in the wind. As usual, her blue eyes
sparkled with mischief. With all her energy, it’s not surprising she can fly. Not only can she fly, but she can become invisible; which has come in handy for her a few times!
“Hey Em! Hey Didge!” I called out in reply.
Bridget “Didge” Kate Jackson is my other best friend. With gorgeous wavy black hair and emerald green eyes, Didge is more laid back than Emily. She always seems to have enough time to help you, or
listen to your problems. Her powers suit her as well. She can shape shift, and she has an emotional antenna. Not an actual antenna, but she can sense people’s moods as she walks by. She can also do
this with animals.
Emily, Didge and I have always been best friends. It wasn’t until we were 10 that we discovered our powers, and we haven’t told a soul.
We live in Roseville, a peaceful town with a population of only 120.
“So where shall we wander today?” Emily said with her usual funny accent.
“I need some new shoes, let’s go shopping.
So we headed towards the shops, chatting a mile a minute. It wasn’t until we had almost reached the “Kmart” outlet, that we heard the scream. It was a blood curdling, ear-piercing scream. We
turned, and saw a tall man in a black suit. He was wearing a beanie and bright blue shoes. A few strands of his ginger hair peaked out from under the beanie. In his hand was a shiny silver knife.
Pinned to the ground by his enormous legs was a young girl, with auburn hair and silver-blue eyes.
Didge gasped, as she knew who they small girl was. We all did.

Isabelle “Belle” Wednesday is a young girl (10) who was very well known in Roseville. Her mother, Vanilla Wednesday, had always been a little bit out there; but was much loved by the community. Her
father is unknown, but the story goes that he got Vanilla pregnant, and left her. Belle and Vanilla were a tight team until a few years ago.
When Belle was 7, on Wednesday 13th, her mother was murdered. She was killed by the road, and witnesses say all they saw of the killer was his bright blue shoes. Belle, sweet and
innocent, was left an orphan. With no nearby relatives to care for her, she’s been living with her best friend, Violet, and her family. No one has ever caught the killer, though many people have
tried. In other towns there have been murders, and all people ever see are his bright blue shoes.

It only took us a few seconds to spring into action. With my mind I tried to remove the knife from the masked man’s hand. I managed to pull it out, while and invisible Emily moved over to pluck it
out of the air. Didge was staring intently at both Belle and her almost killer, trying to pick up emotional signals coming from them.
We thought we had it in the bag, that Belle would be free. The man then turned to face us. He pulled a gun out of his back pocket. He it upwards, and pulled the trigger. Didge screamed, and Emily
jumped. We were trapped; one false move and we’d be dead.
“Why hello girls. How nice to finally meet you. I wasn’t planning to run into you, but it seems I’ll get to kill two birds with one stone.” The man said.
His voice was slow and deliberate.
“I planned to finish what I started with Miss Wednesday here. But now I can ruin your lives as well.”
He stepped to the side. Belle was tied the ground, unable to move. Her face was the picture of terror. The man took a few small steps towards us and with each step our heart skipped another beat.
Eventually he was so close I could see my reflection in his evil eyes. He put the gun in front of us, and we gasped in unison. Slowly and dramatically, he placed the gun to Didge’s head.
Her eyes widened, she looked too scared to breathe. The colour drained from her face. She was marched over next to Belle. With a swift movement, he grabbed Emily and I by the wrists.
“Ow!” I cried.
“Shut up!!!!” he replied.
He then untied Belle, and started to march all of us down a small, junky alleyway.
After a while he led us too a door and opened it. We found ourselves in a dark corridor. There was a distant sound of water drops that broke the deadly silence. Finally we came to the end. We were
shoved into a small, dark, brick room. The man walked out and locked the door.
Didge rushed over to Belle.
“Are you alright? Did he hurt you?” Her voice was frantic with concern.
“I’m fine, just a bit shocked.” It showed in her voice too.
Emily got up from the cold, hard floor. She turned, and began to scream at the wall.
“Emily…” She kept screaming. “Em!!!” She was silent.
“I know you’re upset, but taking out your rage on a wall isn’t the world’s best idea!”
“I know.” She replied sombrely.
We sat silence for seemed like hours, yet it was probably only minutes. The silence in the room could have been shattered with a knife. Finally, Emily spoke up.
“Hey Summer, could you move the key into here with your mind?”
“No, I’ve already tried. It’s a magic proof room.”
Didge’s eyes widened to an alarming.
“That means he knows our secret!”
“I know, but there’s nothing we can do.”
The small amount of light coming through the miniscule window had disappeared, and we had started to doze off. Then there was a noise outside. It was faint, like footsteps getting closer. Finally,
the footsteps were outside and we heard the rattle of keys. The door opened, and we all inhaled.
In walked a guy with dreamy grey-blue eyes and coffee coloured hair. He was gorgeous!
“Hey guys,” Hey guys he said in a dreamy, whispered voice. “I’m Laurie, Sebastian’s nephew. I’m going to get you out of here. He wants to kill you all. Belle…your mother Vanilla shut down my
uncle’s drug dealership. His money went down the drain and he was depressed for years. He only wore black. One day he came across your mother in the street. Now he wants to kill you Belle to finish
what he started. His anger consumed him. And he killed her. I didn’t want to believe it, he’s the only family I have. I couldn’t turn him in. As for you girls, a friend told him about you with his
powers. He wanted to take them from you so he could use them.”
After that story, we headed for the door. We were scared to even breathe. Our feet barely touched the ground as we tiptoed out the door. As we began to walk, we realised we were actually over an
hour from our houses. We walked to the train station and caught a train. Laurie started a conversation with me. Talking to him was so easy and it felt so right. I was lost in our conversation, and
the others just seemed to disappear.
All too soon we reached our stop. I climbed off slowly, trying to savour the moment.
“Goodbye girls. I hope you all stay safe. I’ll try and take care of my uncle.”
And then it happened.
He moved towards me and placed his soft, tanned hand on my shoulder. His eyes locked on mine, and we just starred at eachother. He then leaned in and kissed me. It was a small kiss, but too me it
took all the time in the world.
“Bye gorgeous,” he said as he stepped onto the train.
All four of us began to walk home in the pitch black of the night.
*** 6 MONTHS LATER ***
Emily, Bridget and I were standing at Vanilla Wednesday’s grave. We were there with other friends and family to mark the 4th anniversary of her death. Belle was also there, with a tear
or two in her eyes. There was a quiet hush in the crowd.
“I would like to make an announcement. Vanilla Wednesday’s killer has been caught, and will be charged with numerous murders. If anyone would like more information on the details please see me or
Miss Wednesday here.” It was a familiar voice … Laurie! Emily, Didge and I couldn’t believe our eyes.
A few moments later Laurie made his way towards me. There were a million questions running through my head. None of them I could speak. Finally he was standing right in front of me. My mind was
racing and my heart in a flurry. He leaned in and kissed me.
All my questions were answered in his kiss.
