The light of day,
Used to shine in my eyes,
Waking me to the start of a new day.
I would stir in my bed
Greeted by your smile
Getting me out from the covers.
I would take care of your needs,
Before those of my own
Yours being more important to me.
Through three decades of my life,
And thirteen of your own
You've been at my side
Never once complaining.
I can remember the first day I saw you,
The magical connection we had
And the smile you brought to my face.
It's hard being alone,
Watching your friends grow
From the teenagers they were,
To the families they are.
I sometimes felt like
A child out side the window of a store,
At Christmas time looking in,
Seeing the merriment inside,
But never really being part of it.
And through it all,
You were there for me,
Your smile urging me on.
When my life became bleakest,
And the day was dark
As a cloudy night
During the brightest of sunny days,
You were there to guide me,
Until I could see for myself,
That there was light ahead
Just blocked by the blackness around me.
As I saw you fall asleep
For the last time,
I tried to remember those times,
We had fun together,
But the sadness consumed me,
And I fell in despair,
As my long time friend was gone.
I wake to the first day
Without your smile,
The sun still shining in my eyes.
I turn over to my side,
Watching the neon red numbers of my clock
Slowly ticking by,
Minute by minute,
Hour by hour,
Knowing there is no smile to greet me,
Knowing there is no reason to leave the bed,
Knowing my Lady is not there for me
Knowing now that I truly am,
Alone.
