This poem is a reflection of the impact growing up near the ocean has had on my life. I'm so attached to the ocean,as I know so many others are. It's my place to surf and fish, to play, to go when I'm happy and when I'm sad. The ocean means everything to me, and I can't imagine my life without it.

I see the ocean, I hear its thunder,
I know one day she’ll pull me under,
Deep into the vast blue sea,
Where fish and mermaids will swim with me.

The ocean is like the most demanding lover,
Who wants you to put nothing above her,
And like that lover you once knew,
She can take so much from you.

She’ll steal your body, your heart, your soul,
And deep within her waves they’ll role,
The tide will take them all about,
The waves will break and spit them out.

And if she gives them back to you,
They’re so much different than you once knew,
A piece of her is in each one,
The life you had before is done.

For once she’s in you there’s no escape,
You’re just another life she’ll shape.
