Students sitting at their desks, rulers close at hand,

Sweat beads their furrowed brows,

We're learning maths from distant lands.

Now math is tough, I will allow,

From fractions to geometry,

And not so great for class morale,

We'd all prefer geography.

Yet on this math the class is dwelling,

Hands are cramped and meanly gnarled,

Exasperation. “When is spelling?!”

All those poor souls glumly snarled.

“When we're done, but not before.”

My voice projects across the room.

Their eyes shift slowly to the door,

Knowing recess is called soon.

Students sitting at their desks, rulers close at hand,

Sweat beads their furrowed brows,

In time this math they'll understand.
