My mother has been in care for many years, always difficult to reconcile with

I'm walking through the rest home where my mother spends her days
Happily existing through a drug induced haze

The residents all have different needs and reasons why they came
Whether due to a stroke or illness the results are all the same

They all have different backgrounds; teachers, homemakers, cooks
Lawyers, criminals, accountants, dentists, writers of books

They each had led a full life with dreams, families, a career
'Til some unforsaken misfortune had landed them in here

Oh, the staff, they all are very nice, taking care of all their needs
But some things just can't be replaced, even with all their thoughtful deeds

Recreation has been replaced with sing-a-longs, crafts, bingo
From golf, cycling, reading, volunteering, a trip to Reno

Families come to visit as often as they can
But it is always such a shock, this was not part of the plan

Dad was supposed to retire, Mom was supposed to get a break
Grandkids were supposed to visit; a long vacation they were supposed to take

But sometimes things don't always go according to the plan
Let this be a lesson to us all to be as productive as we can

'Cause someday we may end up here despite our careful ways
And depend on family and care-aids to help us spend our days
