Darkness In The Light

Blue fingers reached out, covered in cuts and dirt, they looked like the hands that you would find of a zombie finding it's way out of it's former counterpart's grave.  Except this was no zombie and on the latter half, if you asked the man only he would consider it a grave.  Well after a century being down here, I definetely wouldn't call it a tea party.  Perphaps where he was losing his face of humanity, his sense of wit and love for laughter was the only thing keeping him going.

The fingers moved with such speed, that the unsuspecting spider that they wrapped around had no idea till it's captor had him in his palms.  Gripping the spider slowly, till he was hanging just by two legs, he dangled him slowly above his head.  Leaning his head back and opening his mouth wide, the man stuck out his tongue and said. "Ahhhhh"  The spider slowly plummeted and with the few crunches heard next, you knew that Charlotte wasn't going to be having a web anytime soon.

The meal was not his favorite, that was what one could say the least.  There was a neccsity that, he needed to eat to maintain his strength.  He had been stuck down here, in a collapsed mine on the coast of Ireland for all this time.  Well, this stirs your question and mine as well, what had brought this fool to this point?  Love.  For when this had all started, he had never expected to be so consumed in hatred.

He had taken them, the very stars of his skies and the waves to his ocean.  Their lives were nothing to his, though he kept him has a trophy.  Made him watch the agony that his wife and son had to suffer, then made him promise to relive it every day for the rest of his life.  His tormentor was right, there was not a single second that he didn't suffer.  His fingers now cluthed at the one thing he was wearing, for he was naked lying in dirt and rocks.  It was a silver pendant, he had long ago used his clothing for kindling of a fire.

The pendant was different though, it was a family heirloom of his wife's that had a raven being wrapped around by a snake on it.  There was a small grimace that settled across his face, a slow tear began to fall.  He wiped the red drop away, licking the very same finger he used to dab it.  Every bit's too precious, I can't even cry without being in pain.

I was indebted to him, so I paid his sacrifice and I became one of his forever kin, a vampire of the night.  That wasn't enough though, I had to follow in his footsteps and break all ties I had to the world around me.  At first I brought back two other corpses, each to take the place of the lives of my wife and child.  The folly plan worked, my Sire thought his bidding was followed and my past life was destroyed.  He knew very little of love.  I had done no such thing, instead I was having them hide from safe spot to safe spot hoping that he would never find out they were alive.

See, the thing for a creature like me is that it was often hard to have any hope at all.  So that was my last flame, the last piece of humanity my bloodthirsty heart seemingly clung unto.  When my lie was discovered, the unspeakable acts still haunt my very core till this day.  He made me watch, there was often late nights where I closed my eyes and the visions and screams would never leave my head.  For months I was locked away in a coffin, one that was suspended in the dark dungeons of a castle deep on the coastal shore.  I heard the waves crashing when they took me, oh how I wish that I could have drowned in those waters that day.

No one spoke to me, my screams were only answered by my own anguished cries alone.  I thought that I would die there, not in flesh but in spirit.  Each day, each hour and every minute that slowly went by, I was almost sure that I would never get my revenge.  Then when I thought for sure I would never escape my cage, finally it seemed that someone was pouring blood above me into the coffin.  It trickled in, but each drop felt like a thousand seas of corpses for me to liquidate my thirst on.  Once my strength became of me, I broke free falling to the pool of blood below and when I looked up they were gone.  Whoever had rescued me, if there had been anyone had never give me the chance to say thank you.

Finally when I found him, feasting on some miners in a shaft that his company owned I knew it was time.  Even if I had to be lost from the world forever, I would take us both down if that was the cost.  So we fought, and the battle raged terrible, I had not the mind to fight him with control.  We raged like beasts, and the world around us trembled at the very strength of our innatural power.  Even in my rage, I still couldn't muster the strength to defeat him on my own.

So like any madman, I took out the supports and brought the whole shaft crashing down.  Through the ruins, I found myself alive but unable to push my way back to the surface.  So here I lived among the destruction, never finding my Sire so I thought him consumed with the same fate.  Still thinking about the past, it was at that very moment that everything would all change.  I heard a rock above me move, then I began to hear the sounds of many others being shifted.  Within minutes, through the darkness I could see lights coming at me.  My first instinct was to retreat, then I realized they were not of origin I was afraid of.

Not Sun powered, but some other mechanic that I could not make sense of once the beam landed on me.  Realizing that now was my chance to final enter the world again, I croaked out with utmost pain.  "Please, please, help me down here!  I'm stuck, I haven't had any water or food in so long.  Please help me!"  There was instantly a yell back from above, "Hold on sir, we'll try to get you out right now!  Don't know how the fuck you got down there, but don't worry you'll be okay now."  Those words were like music to my ears, finally I could be from this accursed hellhole.  When the rope fell down from above and I  gripped it to be pulled up, they would never know the smile that disappeared on my face.  Soon, the whole world will need help.

"Listen, we'll try to pull you up through here, just muster up any strength you have to get out.  If not, we'll have to move some rocks to make sure we can get someone down there."  The man's voice yelled down, and he wasn't lying either.  There was no way two people could make it up and down on the rope.  Wrapping it around my waist and grabbing on the rest, they began hoisting my naked body up towards them.  The flashlights still glistened down, but I could see that it was darkness above, where a monster such as this could sustain.  Reaching the rocks, I could see arms outreaching me and my hand held fast, and I began feeling myself pulled up.

The air hit me, and the cold breeze of the wind felt like the sweetest thing I could revel in.  Numerous stenches all hit me at once, the smell of booze, gas and some other fragrance I couldn't quite make out.  Something like that of a skunk,  but I honestly couldn't focus on that smell too long.  Their faces were disgusted when they saw me, but I could tell that they refrained from telling me out of pity.  I must look like the most hideous human they had ever encountered.

"Here let's get you some clothes, then some food buddy."  They brought me to some small green shack, some sort of outhouse cause it reeked of shit and piss.  In there, I doused the bottle of water they gave me trying my best to clean my hair.  The long black locks went down way past my neck, almost past my waist.  Insects and various bits of dirt fell out with them, and I never felt more relived to run my hands through my hair again.  There was a black shirt, with a white skull on the middle of it and something about Punisher.  Never heard of it, but I liked the design actually and was very pleased to have it in my possession.  The final pieces of clothing were just some blue jeans and white socks, along with a pair of black shoes that had a white stripes running down the sides.

There was all sorts of machinery, back in my day they were very rare but they were abundant it seemed now.  Seemingly the world had gone in the direction I had suspected, which was full of technology.  These men pulled out little devices and were seemingly playing games and talking to other people on them.  In a matter of a few minutes being up from my shithole, I had witnessed the evolution of humanity and I found myself back in a different shithole.  Well, hopefully I would upgrade to a bathroom and gain some better knowledge of what's around me.

My body was that of a toothpick, my bones were visible and my skin was still blue and looked extremely gaunt on my face.  The time for pleasantries was over quickly, I had to make my move now.  Walking outside the small poop cubicle, I slowly began crossing my way over the worker's site to where they had all awaited my return.  One of them called me over, handed me something he called me a hotdog and passed me a red can, with the words Coca Cola written on it.  Taking one bite, the taste was terrible in my mouth and I instantly spit it out.

"Sorry, I wasn't really expecting my food to be like this.  Never had anything like this before, I'm used to eating much different."  I apologized sincerely, for I really did think the morsel of food was grotesque.  I opened the beverage, the can clicking with a small metalic clink has I pulled the tab back on the top.  The dark liquid guzzled down my throat and I swallowed, this beverage was far sweeter and delicious.  I threw the rest back and swallowed the whole drink.  Don't believe everything you read, even though this doesn't sustain us I can still taste what is there.

Crushing the can in my hand and tossing it aside, I would've began to ask them what else was to eat.  But at that moment, I could hear one of the workers beginning to say the worst that I wanted to hear.  "Yeah I just gotta call my boss and the authorities, we gotta figure out what to do to help you man.  Say, forgive me for being rude, what was your name anyways?"  The man said, and even though there was a few of the bunch I knew this wouldn't be a fun sight.  What the men hadn't noticed is that I didn't really have nails of sorts, if anything they were claws.

"The name's Maurice, but you can just call me a monster."  I growled the words, saying them with anger under my breathe not looking the man in the eyes.  His reaction meant little, my hand was already lashing out cutting his throat open.  Blood began shooting out profusely, and before his friends could yell I was already darting like a bullet between them all.  No matter how fast your eye blinked, you wouldn't have been able to keep up with what had happened.

This had gone perfectly like I had planned, if they had run I don't know if I could have managed to chase after one of them in a vehicle.  It seemed like theres was a lot superior to the ones in my day, and that my fatigue would still set in.  The whirlwind of death was about me, and I only spared one man, who I had gripped between my right hand, choking him on his knees.  His eyes pleaded for mercy looking up at me, and I could hear him trying to choke out words inbetween his final breaths.

I loosened my grip, lifting his whole body off the ground and holding him eye level to me.  I couldn't help but exult in this moment, they had thought they had really done the world a kind deed.  No they had only released me, from my state of nothing to be free to reign my cruel blessing across their world once more.  For so long I tried to spare them, I ate off animals and such, then I realized that the animals were really us.
We had these minds, but we still commited acts more terrible than creatures who could think what we could not.

"I thank you, for being the first to allow me to feed in too many years for my old bones to count.  Once I am done with your corpse, know that I will never bother your family.  For through you, I will taste all your memories and everything you have experienced in this miserable world.  If you don't have a family, then I suppose your wallet 's been well off."  Little joke, though I was disappointed that the man didn't clap.  Maybe he was too choked up, thought the shit was too funny.

I gave him a quick death, my fangs sunk into his neck and I urgently drank, drinking every bit of blood that shot forth.  The power that I could feel surging through me, that felt like nothing I had experienced in a long time.  It was like going from having your favorite meal every few nights, to not having it for a lifetime.  All the thoughts and things of this world, the differences between the past and now all hit me at once.  Life had changed quite indeed, and I actually fell to the ground dropping witht the body that was now limp as well.  We both lay there, him dead and I thinking about the world that I had ahead of me now.

They had freed from my prison, but what if this world was my prison for not having my loved ones by my side?  The world had to suffer, for I suffered through this world.  Even in your death, you still ruin me brother.
