A Longing in the Soul
By © Jeff Shumate 2009
Departing from the womb, in separation we are born,
Instant longing in the soul—for what we do not know.
Born in want, but for what? To fill the hole in the soul.
Admiration for idols, addiction within, a wanting, a need.
Purpose in life we desire, many things we admire,
They shall satisfy my thirst, and leave me dry, why?
Idols and addiction go hand in hand, distraction before destruction.
You been there, in utter despair? Do you even care?
Give me substance, my soul’s appeal, helps me feel real, really?
Knowledge is king, we sing! What an awful ring, we know not a thing!
The fountain of youth, we cry, in uphill battle we sigh!
Power and control, the chess match of the soul, checkmate!
What do we need? Redeemer, Savior, and King, the only thing!
A soul longing to belong, all else has been all wrong,
Hand and hand we should be, now I can see, my Creator and me!
