City Hick’s Meal

By Jeff Shumate © 2010

From my porch,

It caught my eye,

A chubby brown squirrel,

Dancing by!

Stopping briefly,

Below the rail,

He nibbled at a shell,

Fallen from my pail.

Sensing some danger,

He slowly looked up…

Me looking him,

He looking me,

Our eyes met squarely,

What did we see?

I saw a squirrel,

A city hick’s meal!

He saw the barrel of a gun,

What a raw deal,

Chubby brown squirrel,

A city hick’s meal,

Never even left my porch,

Not a bad deal!
