Written while traveling on Christmas Day. This is my reflection of the holidays as I'm getting older. It's certainly not polished, but I decided to leave it in its cutesy imperfection. ;)

The SALE sign

blinks ostentatiously

from its glass display.

The offers are like magnets;

joyous holiday music

like a siren's call

to even the strongest of mallgoers.

But suddenly, the day comes

when the signs lead

nowhere,

and the rows of half-priced merchandise

are just

stuff.

Someone else's stuff.

The elegant loops of ribbon,

strings of lights,

carefully iced cookies

are things

not yours,

but trivial pieces

in the game you

left behind.

Yet life goes on

in the snowglobe -

miniature figures

prance proudly around their

immaculate holiday bubble.

So shake it up.

send the glittering snowflakes

whirling.

Let them have their fun -

you certainly did, but

as you're holding the world

in the palm of your hands,

it's all too clear

that you've found

so much more.
