He entered the small house swiftly and quietly, making his way upstairs as soon as he entered. He found her room easily and slipped in to stand next to her twin sized bed.

He placed a long boney hand onto her forehead. It was not time. Not quite. As he lifted his hand up he stroked her round bald head. He shook his head sadly.

He decided to rest for a while and took a seat in a chair next to her bed. Feeling quite comfortable he allowed himself to drift to sleep.

“Ahh!” he jumped up from his chair and saw the girl standing on the other side of her bed with a pillow held high in her one hand screaming. He looked around him to see what was causing her such distress but saw nothing.

“Who are you!?” She screeched.

Once again Liam looked around the room and again found nothing. He realized that she was staring at him. Maybe now was the time he thought. He lifted his hand and placed it on his chest as if to ask if she was screaming at him.

“Yes you! You’re the only creeper sitting in my chair watching me sleep. Who else would I be screaming at?” Lauren had backed up completely against the wall and began making her way toward the phone.

His reflexes were quick and he was next to her within seconds. He grabbed the phone out of her hand and placed his other hand over her mouth.

“Shhh” he soothed. She fought against his grip but could not escape. She bit down hard on his hand but he did not flinch.

“Let’s chat shall we?” He whispered softly.

She slowly nodded. He released her and went to go sit on her bed still holding the phone in his other hand.

“Who are you!” she shouted, eyes bolting to the door trying to figure out if she could make a run for it.

“You should sit. You’re going to strain yourself. Of course that would make my job much simpler.” His voice was very soft and soothing, his eyes staring into her. This seemed to calm woman who was now following his instructions and taking a seat next to him.

“My name is Liam.”

“Why are you here?” Her voice had quieted, body stopped trembling.

“I am here for you.”

“For me?”

“Of course. I am one of a many, part of something much greater. Soon you will be too. No longer will you bear the pain of your cancerous body.” Liam began to move closer to the young woman. It was always harder when he had to explain but her eyes told him that she understood now.

“Free me.”

He closed the gap between them and gently kissed her lips. She let out a gasp and her body flopped onto the bed, her soul released from it now drifting off into the next life. Liam turned and got up. A reaper’s job is never finished.
