The anticipation for the day
Wakes me just before six.
I turn out of bed, body stiff and Frankenstein-stumble to the coffee pot.
Beginning the day makes me nervous.
The butterflies feel like metal head
Pterodactyls who’ve formed
A mosh pit in my stomach.
To me it’s a good nervous,
Like the kind you get on a roller coaster.
Climbing up the tracks,
Right before the plummet,
This is my favorite time of day.
I am the only person awake
On this quiet private drive,
But the Jays are singing.
Calling out the hummingbirds,
Who tantalize the neighborhood cats.
And the stray dog that I feed is waiting
At the front gate with a grin on his face.
The optimistic sun peeks up over the hill,
To wish me well on my way.
The crisp air nibbles my nose,
And nothing feels better
Than getting up early enough
To have the time to just notice.
