Caught by surprise by my cat
A crimson headed House Finch
is left quivering and afraid
on the doormat, as a gift.
I wept when I found it,
It’s feathers were matted
And parted, and missing.
It’s wings were not able to fly
My cat is pleased. “This bird is for you,
For all the times you’ve fed me
And pet me, and dangled
A ribbon above my head, thank you.”
The bird must be in shock,
trembling and lying on its side
wings fluttering ever so slightly
as my father places it in a box.
I feel like I must be in shock, too
Not ready to witness death
So painful, and frightening
Even if it is a house finch.
I can’t help but think that
this finch has a family or friends
Who’ll be devastated that
He was swiped from the sky.
My dad tells me to quit my crying
things like this happen,
Everybody dies someday,
and the world keeps turning
But for this moment, I’ll stay
And weep for this red headed finch
Who deserves honor and sorrow
as much as anyone else.
