Shakespeare is a well-known dramatic play writer. In his play Macbeth he used the themes of The Chronicles written by Raphael Holinshed. Instead of directly writing a story based off facts from The Chronicles, Shakespeare mixed in his own dramatic thoughts to show the different ways of becoming king. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare used his characters to show the honest and treacherous way to become king. In his play he used Duncan to show flaws of being king, Macbeth to show the wrong way to become king, and Malcom to show the honest and correct way to become king.
Shakespeare used his characters to inform us, entertainingly, on how people became kings. Shakespeare used historical events to his advantage. For example, The Historical Context Of Macbeth stated, "Shakespeare version of Macbeth's relationship comes from several places in Holinshed's The Chronicles." In the play Macbeth was viewed by Duncan as trustworthy, loyal, and brave. Duncan said to Macbeth, "But the signs of nobleness like stars shine on all deservers. [To Macbeth] From hence to inverness bind us further to you." (Macbeth pg.21) Duncan wanted to show appreciation towards Macbeth since he fought hard in the war and wasn't going to be the next king. Duncan was deemed as a good king because he treated his people and thanes like seeds so that they could grow and prosper, but that was Duncan's flaw. "King Duff, like Duncan, is murdered by a nobleman he trusts." (The Historical Context Of Macbeth) Duncan's trust and generosity led to his downfall.
Shakespeare used Macbeth as an example of how to become king the wrong way. Macbeth first started out with good qualities that would've made him a good king. He was a good soldier and had good morals. Macbeth morals became clear after he got tired of Lady Macbeth persuading him to kill Duncan and questioning his manhood, he said, "We will proceed no further in this buisness. He hath honoured me of late, and I have brought golden opinions from all sorts of people, which would be worn now in their newest gloss, not cast aside so soon.--- Dare do all that all may become a man; who dares do more is none." (pg.33) When he told Lady Macbeth that he showed a certain respect he had for himself and Duncan. "Donwald like Shakespeare's Macbeth, acts with support of an ambitious wife." (The Historical Context Of Macbeth) Because of Lady Macbeth's persuasion, Macbeth changed his mind and became everything he was against. He went from not wanting to kill anyone at all, to killing anyone in his way including his bestfriend and his cousin's family. Lady Macbeth turned Macbeth into a tyrant and merciless killer, and resulted in him going the wrong way to become king.
Malcolm was Shakespeare's way of showing the correct way to try and become king. Malcolm was already heir to the throne, Duncan even told Macbeth, "We will establish our estate upon our eldest Malcolm." (pg.21) Malcolm earned the throne honestly. He also was pure. Even though he was up for getting rid of Macbeth, he was not the one that killed him, it was Macduff. Malcolm was innocent and the actual choice to become king. He had the right from his father to become king through inheritance.
In Summary, Shakespeare used entertainment to somewhat inform generations the correct way to become king. He used actual facts but added drama to it to get the point across to people of the different ways to take the throne. Using the two characters Malcolm and Macbeth Shakespeare dramatically explained the taking of the throne. Macbeth, in my opinion, was the sugar coated versions of Machivelli and Raphael Holinshed's explanations of how princes eventually became kings and how people outside the kingdom became dominant.
