The past 3 weeks have been exhausting, I have not had any communication with my research team after the storm and each day is a struggle. Every morning I awake to pain of my sore back sleeping on the cold rock with a bit of leaves to cushion me, the piercing wind who lets itself in from the small crack left by my bag blocking the entrance to this hollow cave on the side of the mountain, and last but not least, the sound, the horrifying sound of those filthy canines, howling and grunting outside my cave to which I have called home for the past 3 weeks. My mountain is a large mountain, it is the only one not connected to any other mountains, it is barricaded by the snow covered forest and a small stream that flows near it. The wolves thirst for my flesh drives them crazy, sometimes I think they sit in front of my cave waiting for me to emerge so that they may feast on my undernourished body, or maybe they think that I will die soon, and if I was to die I will take as much of them with me. My research was about the white hare, but now, I am looking out for these canines. From the small cracks in my cave I can see the wolves prancing around, playing, and growling in my direction, a mockery I cannot take any more.

It was time to go on top the mountain, everyday, before sundown, a cargo plane flies on top of me, its shadow consuming the whole mountain it seems. I have tried many times to get its attention, but as usual it flies past me, I blame my white coat for this, I blend in with the snow and I cannot seem to draw its attention. I risk my life to get its attention, every time I go out, I am vulnerable to the pack, or what is left of it. The pack consisted of six members, five young adults and 1 alpha male, its grey body with a black stripe down its middle identifies it. On the first week, I shot and killed 2 wolves feeding on a deer carcass, I needed the meat and the wolves would have probably killed me to. On the second week I killed 1 more as it was taking a drink for the river, it was a threat and it had to be eliminated. But every time I had killed a wolf, the alpha came and licked the carcass of the dead wolf and stared at me before howling and running off.

It was the 29th day and it was time to go on top of the mountain, surely by now someone has noticed me missing and all planes and helicopters will be notified. The previous day I found a flare buried deep in my bag, I never noticed it but it was in a hidden part of the bag on the bottom sitting underneath by papers and documents, I told myself tomorrow I was going to use it.

Before I removed the barrier, I heard shuffling and whimpers outside, I readied my rifle and kicked the bag, the bag went rolling, and beside it there was a wolf, my adrenaline kicked in and I aimed but my hands were shaking, I pulled the trigger but I missed, and the young wolf sped off into the woods. I only had a few more bullets and cannot afford to miss like that. I looked out for the remaining wolves so that i could go get my bag, I went down and from the corners of my eye I saw some movement, the wolf, but not the younger ones, the alpha. It was standing 100 yards away and its head was bent, its yellow eyes piercing into mine, it was staring into my body, as is to see how fast my heart was beating. I slowly raised my rifle and set my cross hairs on the wolf, but the familiar thunderous sound of the cargo plane a few miles away startled in and it bolted off into the woods.

I ran as fast as I can to the top and took out my flare. The plane was about 10 miles away and I waved the flare like a mad man, swinging it around and around. When it was about 500 meters away from me, the back doors opened and a bag came out . The bag landed a few meters down the mountain, it was a big duffel bag, inside it contained food, water and a blanket. They had seen me and they still kept flying in their normal route, but underneath all that was a folded paper, it read , “ we saw your signal yesterday, we will be back in a couple of hours with a helicopter to take you out, in the mean time, here are some clothes and food, stay at the top of the mountain and we will be there as soon as possible”.

I made my way up to my cave and took out my bag and sat inside consuming the plethora of food that was given. I then made my way to the top of the mountain with my bags and lay in the snow. I closed my eyes but was aware not to sleep, if I had fallen asleep I would be a easy picking for the pack. I them dreamed, dreamed of what I had to go back to, my wife, my kids my home. Just then a odd thought came over me the wolves never tried to attack me, all these weeks I seen them as a threat, but in the end I was a threat, the pack was actually a family, that explains the younger wolves and the bigger one, and never did it occur to me that alpha only appeared when after I had killed the first 2 wolves.

I awoke to the sound of feet running in tall snow, I turned around and reached for my rifle, but before I can grab it, I felt a sharp pain on the side of my leg, it was extremely painful, even though my leg was partially frozen from the cold, I felt something warm on my leg, I looked and was face to face from one of the young wolves. Its teeth was snared and it had its teeth buried deep into my leg, the warmth was caused by my blood but it was overlooked by the pain. The wolf was dragging me away, I struggled as hard as I can, trying to kick it off with my other leg but after I managed to get one good kick, the wolf was not phased and the second younger wolf came and was tugging on my boot. I tried reaching for my rifle but it was too far away, I screamed out loud hoping for something, but in response I heard a howl. The wolf that was holding on to my boot let go and howled back, and then another howl. They wolves were not eating me they just say down with theirs mouths in my leg and boot, I tried to move my leg that was getting bit but every time I moved, the wolf closed even harder.

After about 5 minutes sitting in the snow soaked by my blood, I realized that the wolves were not moving but just waiting, then I realized they were waiting for the alpha. It was over, all these days that were spent surviving was to end of as me being killed to these wolves. The anticipation was killing me, knowing that I was either going to die, or left to die was becoming more and more possible every second that the helicopter was not here, the alpha could arrive any second.

After 15 minutes I heard a sound, the sound of a helicopter. I prayed that they would come before the alpha who still hasn’t arrived yet. Right as my hopes of living were going up it was shattered. In front of me I saw a dark figure, its head held up high and its teeth snared, the 2 younger wolves let go. I closed my eyes and waited for my death, it was inevitable and there was no way I was going to live. As I prayed my death be fast and quick, the snow beside me erupted, and in its place a bullet. The helicopter was close, it was firing at the wolves, the man shooting must have gotten his gun jammed because he went back inside. The alpha approached me again, it took a hold of my already bitten leg and started to tear. The pain was indescribable , it was as if you entire life was rested in that leg and the wolf was taking it, along with the pain I was feeling nauseous from the loss of blood, finally my leg turned numb and I looked down to see what was left, the wolf had my leg in its mouth, blood was everywhere, my leg was squirting out blood and the snow turned red. The wolf the dropped my leg and proceeded to bite my arm.

I wanted to die, I wanted to die and quick, the pain was too much, I would rather die then living with this pain. My voice ha gotten sore from the screaming and I cannot fight it any more. The wolf was proceeding to tear off my arm but then it stopped, two men fell from the helicopter which was hovering a couple of meters above me, I looked around and no longer saw the wolves.

“ We are going to take you to the hospital Dr. Laire, stay with me”, said the man. As I was being raided up I saw them, they looked up at me with relief, as if they had achieved something,I looked down to see the remains of my leg and blood. The wolves watched me the whole time as I was going up and after I entered into the helicopter. After I had entered the younger wolves walked away, but the alpha stayed and pierced me one last time with his yellow eyes.

My trip to the hospital felt long, they gave me some painkillers on the way but it was no use, the pain was there but I also felt something else, I felt that I was given mercy, mercy by the ferocious canines as I referred to earlier, they had me, they could have killed me, but they didn’t, but why, why did they pardon me, they ripped of my leg but that was all, I had killed 3 of their siblings and yet they chose to spare me all this time until the helicopter arrived. It was as if to tell me that they are not as ruthless as I had pictured them in my mind, are they more civilized then me? I lost a limb and they lost 3 lives, I was grateful for that. Maybe their goal was not to kill me, but to punish me, that explains why they did not eat me , they wanted to show me pain. In the end, I felt like apologizing, I felt as if I harmed them more then them to me. I was slowly loosing conciseness but I was glad to be out of there, the only thing I can think of was my family, my house and my children and the life that was given to me by the generous wolf.
