“But I must admit, I miss you quite terribly. The world is too quiet without you nearby.”  Lemony Snicket

She was hurting, she was crying, she was missing a part of herself, because of him. Him? He was happy, he was fine, he was better without her. But that’s only what she thought.

She was Leah and he was Elias. Leah was different. Starting from when she was very young, she was mature for her age. While everyone was goofing around, she was serious. When everyone else was enjoying life and only thinking about fun, she was studying hard, not going out, and she was focused on work. Of course she wanted to have fun, but she never let herself do what she wanted to do. She forced herself into high discipline and an organized, scheduled life.

But one day, at this three week sleep-away camp, she met a guy, his name was Elias. Leah was walking down the hall of her school, heading to her next class. And she’s never had a big interest for dating, relationships or boys in general. But as she was walking in one direction and he the other, she saw him. And for a split second, he was all that she could see. Every noise became silent, and all sight became blurry. All except him. She just kept walking, and because she was so unfocused, she tripped over a bottled water on the floor and all her belongings flew across the room. After hearing that Leah was very “nerdy”, you might think that she was very ugly. But to be honest, she wasn’t PRETTY. She was just average attractiveness. She was more cute than pretty and her sense of style wasn’t TERRIBLE. Because Elias was right in front of Leah when she fell, he helped her up and gathered her things. While Elias was doing all these things, Leah was just watching him. Elias noticed that and asked her,

“Are you okay?”

She was still a little hazy, so once she snapped out of it, she asked, “What?”

Elias gave a little chuckle and repeated himself again, “Are you okay?”

And Leah replied, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m good.”

Elias thought to himself, What is it with this girl? I’ve just met her, but I wanna see her face everyday. I wanna hang with her and talk to her.

With that, he said, “I’ll walk you to class, where are you going?”

“I’m going to 217, but you really don’t have to do that. By the way, we don’t even know each other.”

“Okay then. But I just wanted to make sure that you’re okay. Could I please walk you to class?”

“I guess if you put it that way, I become the bad guy, so sure.”

And the whole way to room 217, Elias took peeps at Leah to see if she was interested in him. And Leah took peeps at Elias to see if he was interested in her, but sadly, they never caught each other’s eyes. Once they arrived at 217, they waved goodbye, but both secretly wished that it wouldn’t be a goodbye, but a see you later. And maybe, that was a secret wish that God granted true. Because they surely did see each other, and a heck amount of times too.

The next day, Leah woke up and checked her phone, “July 25, 2017; 6:45 A.M.” So she woke up and got ready, she didn’t do anything extra, she threw on a sweatshirt and a pair of shorts. She went to breakfast and surprisingly, Elias was on line right in front of her, so she said,
“Hey! You’re the guy from yesterday right? I realized that I couldn’t get your name. Sorry about yesterday, I was a little all over the place. Forgive me?”

“Umm, my name is Elias and it’s fine, I was a little weird yesterday, especially because we don’t even know each other. What’s your name?

“I’m Leah, this is the first time I’ve been at a sleepaway camp so I’m pretty confused and I don’t really know anyone here, so I’m pretty lonely.”

“WHATT?! It’s been a week! Don’t you have anyone from your classes?”

“No, not really, I would consider myself very introverted.”

“Oh, well I could be your first friend here. I mean, if you wouldn’t mind.”

“Well, I guess there’s nothing bad about having a friend.”

“Okay, well, let’s start by eating together.”

“Okay, get your food and come to table 5!”

For the next two weeks, Leah and Elias ate together, walked together, spoke together, and worked together. And you might be thinking, This is going to be like every other cheesy love story where everyone ends up happily ever after and they get married, or something like that. But guess what! It’s not. Obviously, because of the beginning, but whatever, on with the story.

At the end of each week, on Friday, there was a dance. And at the first dance, Leah went with nobody and Elias went with his friends. But the next few times, Elias brought up the courage to ask Leah out to both dances. At both dances, they were like a cute couple. They hugged, laughed, slow danced, sang, ate etc.

But as the last week, and ultimately last day came closer and closer, Leah realized that after this, she wouldn’t be able to see Elias ever again. After all, he lived in Hong Kong and she lived in the U.S. It would be almost impossible. Of course, Elias saw this coming too, but all he wanted to do was see Leah smile. He didn’t want to see her crying or in pain, he just wanted her to be happy. And on the last day, Elias woke up and cried. He bawled his eyes out while showering and getting ready for the final day. But once he left his dormitory, he stopped, he saw Leah crying and all he wanted to do was make her stop. He ran up to her and gave her a nice, warm hug. He smiled for her and he stayed happy for her. They both were sad, but one showed it while the other didn’t. Leah was crying, but in between her cries, she said,

“Elias? Promise me that you’ll never forget me. Promise me that you will find me again.”

“Of course. No matter what, I’ll always remember you. I’ll do anything to see you again.”

And that was it. Elias’s parents found him and Leah’s parents found her and they went on their ways.

But for the next two months, they texted each other and called each other every day. They shared their new preferences and their new happenings. In the end though, staying loyal to a person you never see is very hard. The fact that she couldn’t see him again hurt Leah so bad. She cried everyday, she missed him so much. And so did Elias, he hurt too, despite being a boy, he still had a heart. Everyday, Elias was reminded of how much he had hurt such an amazing girl, Leah told him everyday how she missed him, and how much pain she got from it. So one day, even though he knew it was going to hurt her more than anything that he had done before, he let her go. He knew that she was better off without him, she could be so much more, and he didn’t answer her texts or any of her calls. He let her forget him. After a while, no more texts came, no more calls. So Elias thought, I guess she moved on. I’m very sorry, but I couldn’t see you hurting anymore Leah. And because Elias didn’t reply or call back, she thought, I guess he found someone else. I gave him everything I had, yet he still left me. But surely, as promised, they never forgot each other and the memories made. They could remember everything as if it was yesterday, and both would give up anything to see each other again. Sadly though, the second part of the promise was not kept.

In the end, they never saw each other again, texted each other again, or heard each other’s voices again. How do I know? Because that’s my story, that was the story of me and my love. Of course I don’t know what he thought in his mind. But that’s what I’m hoping happened, it hurts too much to think that he actually just got tired of me or just left me on read because he found a new person.
