Tale of the Goddess…
Amidst the tales of rich heritage of ancient Greek, there is hidden a strangest story or say a fairy tale. It is the Tale of Goddess of marriage and birth and the father of gods and men.
Here begins story of Goddess Hera and Zeus…
Hera lived in ancient Athens. She was the only daughter of Baker Cronus and his wife Rhea. And both of them loved Hera above anything. Though being mother of eighteen year old Hera, Rhea looked like a young Greek goddess. Hera herself was a young beautiful goddess like figure. Hera’s best friend was Anastasia. Both of them were like sisters and Anastasia was like a daughter to Rhea.
Since when this story unfold the rule of Athens was in the hands of cruel king, Antiganos. He was a shrewd man who was only concerned about his own pleasures. Since he had come to throne, no woman was safe in Athens. His servants would kidnap any beautiful girl going in streets and they would then be forced to serve for cruel kings pleasures. The only time young girls could come out of home was early morning.
As any other day, Hera began her day early in the morning, delivering bread to the costumers. “Kalimera Madam Agatha” Hera greeted her last costumer. She then rode back on her beautiful brown horse and took off towards her best friend Anastasia’s house. Anastasia’s mother only trusted her daughter’s safety in Hera’s home so she agreed in sending her daughter with Hera for a week. On their way towards Hera’s home, there was still two hours of safety left, so they calmly covered their path, singing their favorite song and got followed by spectators who were blindfolded in their song…
I'm blind-folded on this carriage ride that they call life.
Keep trying to make it, through that next turn,
Knuckles white and holdin' tight.
So here I go, takin' a curve,
But I know that I'm never alone.
I think of you, I know you'd never let me go.

I feel connected, protected,
It's like you're sitting right with me, All the time.
You hear me, you're near me,
And everything else is gonna be alright.
'Cause nothin' can break this,
Nothin' can break this,
Nothin' can break this time.
Connected... connected inside.
They completed their song and looked around, their spectators acted busy and they laughed at them and walked their way to Hera’s home with Hera’s horse following them. They were greeted outside Hera’s house by ‘pretending-to-be’ angry mother of Hera. “Hera, Anastasia what do you think you were doing? You just crossed safe time limit. Five minutes more and…”Rhea snapped at her two loving sweethearts. Hera replied calmly, “But we didn’t cross it mother, calm down, we are safe”. Rhea looked at Hera and Anastasia turn-by-turn to check if they were really safe and then sighed. She took them in a hug and spoke in their ears in a low voice, “two of you are my lives” Then she took them in.
Rhea fed her dear daughters with her own hands and then Hera took Anastasia in her own room. There they made themselves comfortable. Anastasia hadn’t brought any luggage with her as Hera’s home was a second home for her. Most of her clothes were at her home only. They chatted for a long time. Meanwhile, Rhea and Cronus were working in the bakery.
After few hours, near late afternoon, Rhea came in their room. She calmly caressed Hera’s hairs and asked her to get ready in her new dress without asking any questions. Hera did what was said without questioning wondering what was going on. She came out to see an old man sitting in Hera’s welcome. He looked like a very old man but still had strength of a young man. Even being a grey beard he did looked handsome.
Lots of questions were running in Hera’s mind. She never saw this man before. Why was she asked to get ready in her best dress for him? Why was he visiting them? Why was her mother acting so strangely? Why was that man looking at her with those eyes? Why were her parents acting like that? Is he her grandfather? Inspite of being filled with so many questions, she decided to wait till story unfolded itself.
Her mother guided Hera, to go sit beside the old man. He looked at Hera coming towards him. It was clear that old man was taken away in her beauty. He looked at her for a long time and then he spoke. His voice was like thunder claps and was full of authority. Hera didn’t believe the words that came out of his mouth. “Am ready to marry your daughter” he said. Hera looked in shock at her parents’ delighted expression and then at the old man’s face. Hera then ran off to her room.
“What were they thinking? Why do they want to do it to me? Why do they want their only daughter to marry a stupid old man? Ok he isn’t stupid, but look at his age” Hera thought to herself. But she couldn’t even voice her opinions in that matter. What she could do was cry and she cried. Rhea came and sat beside her. She knew her daughter was upset. But she knew that it was best for her. Anastasia just stood behind them. She was herself concerned for her friend.
Rhea started her little speech, “Hera dear, you know we love you and we do think the best of you. And under the following circumstances your virtue isn’t safe here in Athens. And trust me, that man, he just looks…old but he is actually really strong. You will always be happy with him. You will soon even forget your parents. Dear this is all I can say, rest is asked to be hushed for now.” Rhea patted her daughters back and waited for her reply. And as her reply, Hera broke off in her mother’s arms. She pleaded and begged her mother not to do this to her. She promised that she will do as said, but nothing came to her help. Rhea went out of her daughter’s room helpless with tears now filled in her own eyes.
Hera saw her leave and then broke off, crying and wailing like a two year old kid in her best friends arms. Behind her back, Anastasia brushed off a single tear off her cheek. Her mother had said that Hera will soon need her. And that’s why she was allowed to be with her for a week. She hadn’t talked about it with Hera for she thought she might get worried or something.
Soon, Hera’s wedding day came. As she said she do, she pledged to never come back to see her parents again. She was heart-broken, she didn’t wanted to leave to some unknown place where no-one was there, her parents and not even her best friend.
The old man took her with him to some strange place. Hera didn’t pay even a least bit attention to the path and when they stopped they were at a strange place. It was an enormous castle but it was…how? It was in the clouds.
The old man was God Zeus, the father of Gods, Hera soon discovered. But she wondered why she was married to such an almighty person? Then the secrets unfolded, actually even her parents were Greek god and goddess. But why it was kept a secret to her, she wondered. Even after acknowledging that she was married to the most powerful, Hera still remained upset. And she always lived by her.
To please her, Zeus gifted her place as Goddess of Marriage and Birth, secretly wishing her to understand the duties of a married woman. It was her duty now to take care of Woman in their marriage and motherhood. She enjoyed doing it. And on peeping in other woman’s life there was one thing she wanted, love and a baby.
She started spending a little more time with Zeus. And then she actually started loving him. But there was one thing she was envious about and it was the flirteous nature of her husband. She was always jealous of woman around him. She got famous of her jealousy. She soon bore a son of Zeus and always envied her husband’s other children. She never visited her parents again and she spread the light in married life of her best friend Anastasia. And became popular as her step son Hercules’ number one enemy.
