I wrote this about a year ago. It might not be as well written as it could be. Hope you like it, I had quite a real life inspiration for writing this book. Narrated by female protagonist, Lizzie Grant. Set in present day United States.

The Tunnels

The sound awoke me from my sleep. I live alone, and it's not pleasant sleeping in the dark shadows of my small house. I'm still shaken from the accident. I will never get that image out of my mind. The sound I heard was a very strange, almost chattering sound. The time was 2:00 A. M., and I was awake until midnight studying for my English exam. I go to the local university. I get out of my fluffy comfortable bed, and walk through the hall. It's now Saturday, and the exam is on Monday. I'm so exhausted I almost fall asleep right in my tracks. However, the next thing I see makes me wide awake. Out the window, in my backyard is an abnormal looking hole. I decide to get on a pair of boots and walk outside to investigate. I'm wearing nothing but some sweat pants and a long chettah print shirt. It's late fall, and I'm nearly freezing. It's very dark outside, and I can barely see due to a light fog. I walk across the damp lawn to the site. By the way, my name is Lizzie Grant. It's short for Elizabeth. I have longish curly brown hair, and dark brown eyes. What I lack in beauty I make up for in intelligence. That is why I'm majoring in journalism. Ever since I saw the reporters in foreign counties talking about the different people suffering. The innocent, average people just like me. I want to be just like that reporter, I want to help people and tell the world their experiences. Anyway, I get up close to the hole, and carefully try not to fall in. I stumble a little bit too close and lose my balance for a second; however, I'm fine in seconds. Seeing this strange occurance causes me to mutter "How did this get here?" I'm in shock. This has to be the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me. I pinch my arm to make sure I'm not still dreaming in my bed. That reminds me of my bed. "Well." There isn't anything I can do about it now. It's not like I can call the cops. I imagine saying "Help me! There is a strange dark hole in my yard!" They would think I'm one of the many lunatics in my town. I'll tell Jared about it tomorrow. I go back inside, take off my boots and walk back to my bed. "Finally." I say, exhausted. I sleep until 10:00 A. M. I dream about the tunnel. That I fall through and it never seems to end. I also hear the screams of that horrific day. I wake up startled. I'm late going to lunch with my best friend Jared. I hurry up and wake my aching body. I put my hair in a bun, and look in the mirror. "Not so bad." I walk to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. I turn on the T. V. to watch the morning news. All of the usual boring things appear, until something causes me to become aghast. Something about tunnels.
