He looks for her as she awaits his arrival. Her friends take in the night as she prepares for a night of discovery. She is so beautiful. It's late. The old year is on it’s way out. She anticipates something great, something new that will change her life forever and she senses that it will involve him. It’s just a feeling but the feeling is so real. There he is, walking her way, thinking of her, rehearsing the words that he hopes will win her heart. He wonders how he will hold her the first time he sees her. Will he run to her, walk, sneak. He's nervous and excited. Tonight their lives become one again. What will she think. Will the feelings still be alive? Will he be everything that she expects. He nervously anticipates the appointment with destiny. His thoughts are mired in a scrambled mix of doubt, fear, love. How will she look? Will they know? So many crazy thoughts invade the fibre of his being. As he battles the butterflies, with his heart racing, he anxiously anticipates the fire that once burned the last time they touched. He walks along for a few brief moments, stops to look for her in the crowd, and then he sees her. It's nearly midnight. The town's bell tower begins to ring.
He twists and turns his way through the crowd, keeping his eyes fixed on her. Moments later they are face to face. Silently they look into each others eyes. He knows. He sees it in her eyes. Her heart pounds. In the moment she loses her breath. Emotions unfold instantly. The cacophony of the crowd, the snow descending from the sky, the bell tower singing out tunes as midnight approaches all seem to be a pitiful haze, barely scratching the surface of the cacoon that surrounds their invisible world. Nothing exists just for the moment but their love. They stand in awe, a breath apart, staring, smiling, crying. He slowly reaches for her hand and they touch for the first time. Forever fails to paint the flavor, the expectations, the everything of the moment. Their thoughts race with obvious questions. What? How? When? The world is crazy. Nervous energy consumes their existence at this moment. She reaches to his face and traces his lips. They embrace. All is quiet, except their thoughts, their hearts, their expectations, their lives, as they find themselves suddenly one. In the background the town clock still sings. The last ring of midnight fast approaches. She closes her eyes. Gong! It's nearly midnight. The wind wisps her scent past his body. He tastes her breath without a kiss. He pulls her to him and can feel her heart beat. The air is alive. He wants to tell her that every moment they've been apart has extinguished the importance of every event in his life. He wants to confess his lifetime love for her. She wants to ask but she’ll have to wait. Tomorrow is only a few rings away. The tower stands proudly, while the bells chime, the snow falls and the crowd cheers in the new year. Face to face his eyes pierce endlessly into her soul. He snatches her ever closer and their faces touch, quietly, gently as their lips brush past one another. They close their eyes as they navigate their way around each other cheek to cheek, smelling, memorizing, touching, savoring, expecting... aching. He runs his fingers through her hair as he pulls her face to his chest. Her beautiful fragrance consumes his thoughts as he inhales the hint of perfume in her hair, on her neck, on her lips. They open their eys and she looks to him. He asks her to dance but there is no music other than the last ring of the belltower. It doesn’t matter. Their heartbeats create the rhythm this eve. They begin to dance, slowly, quietly, and the world watches…
